Just ignore the comments after the article. (I'm surprised those people read the WSJ; perhaps they're just "celebrity seekers.")

Like they say: Rich or poor, it's good to have money.

As somebody once said 'Money doesn't bring you happiness - I've been sad when I was poor and I've been sad now that I'm rich and the latter is far better'.

I'd like to have the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness.

I think everyone keeps forgetting that this took David over 40 years to accomplish. Remember back in 1974 he was starving in New York and Chicago

He's traded away more of his life than most everyone else -- including me -- and in return for his efforts he can acquire this (as well as other material things.) I have no intellectual or moral issues with this. I am happy for him.

Congrats--sounds like Copperfield and his family finally got the house they wanted. (Although it does seem a bit pricey compared to some of the other super deluxe properties in the "Mansion" section of WSJ).
Perhaps we'll see an article/photospread on the house in Genii?

Seventeen and a half million dollars? Wow. That's more money than I make in a year.

Yeah, after 40 years this magic thing in finally beginning to pay off.
I can remember just ten years ago when he could barely afford to buy those eleven islands in the Bahamas. (He really wanted twelve, but when times are tough you have to make due as best you can.)
In 1974, Copperfield was 18 (same as me) and had the lead role in The Magic Man and then headlined at the Pagoda Hotel in Honolulu for several months ... the poor starving sap.
I on the other hand, was lucky enough to have a real job. Making sandwiches at Subway. You'll never starve if your work involves lunch meats.
Seriously, I doubt that David ever missed a meal.
And that's a nice house.

At that time, David was 18 years old. "While participating in the musical, I have to do a magic show and sing. I wouldn't put much faith in that particular article, or the website it came from!
Its owner and chief writer seems to be a chap from Sumatra.
Likely not a believable source of accurate historical information on DC's personal life.

I don't think he "starved" in the sense that poor people starve ... or "starved" at all for that matter.
In the capacity he used the word in the interview you referenced, I'm going to guess it was simple overstatement designed to express that the road to the top wasn't always easy.
It's kind of hard to "starve" or be so low that you're in serious trouble when you've got two parents less than an hour away, both small business owners and both obviously well off enough to give David whatever he needed money wise, whenever he needed it.
As well, he had just come off a lengthy run earning a salary in Chicago, so ..... I would posit that his reference to "starving" is likely more one referencing being a bit short on cash.
Suffice it to say D.C. came from humble beginnings, to become the most well known, and most handsomely rewarded magician in modern history.
I'm sure we'd all agree that he deserves all his various blessings in life to date.
