Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (July 2016)

Postby Dustin Stinett » July 1st, 2016, 7:29 pm

Schedule Note

The Magic Castle and the offices of the AMA will be closed on Monday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

Because When I Think “Magic” I Think “Con Man”

The annual “Soapy Smith Night” at The Magic Castle will be on July 10. Dress up in your 19th century finery and buck the tiger in the Inner Circle. $10 per person, all members are welcome. Proceeds benefit the Dai Vernon Foundation (who, as you all know, was just some lowly magician versus a celebrated criminal).

The Museum Gets a Facelift

The Castle’s original theater (down in the basement) that became the Museum and an overflow showroom is getting a much-needed facelift. It will have tiered seating and new lighting that will make the viewing and performing experience much better. It closed on June 27 and is scheduled to reopen on July 9.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive

New magnetic member pins are now available for purchase in the Gift Shop. (The classic tie pin style is still available as well.)

Showoff at the Showdown

The summer Strolling Magic Showdown takes place on July 19 in the Inner Circle. Participant registration (performers and judges) begins at 7PM. The competition begins at 8PM. All members welcome.

Perks: We Got Lots of Perks

U.F. “Gen” Grant was an inventive genius and chances are good that, if you purchased magic apparatus in the last 50 years or so, you have something he invented and/or marketed. Trustee Tom Ogden was acquainted with Gen Grant, and on July 20 will hold a perk highlighting this giant of our craft. 8PM in the Inner Circle. Because secrets will be discussed, the perk is reserved for Magician Members only.

Looking ahead into August, there will be an “Assisted Creativity Tune-Up” with Scott Grossberg on 8/3 and Mike Caveney will hold a perk on Classic Correspondence Volume 3 on 8/10.

More Lunchtime Performances

Effective July 15, a third show time has been added to the Friday Lunch performance schedule in the Close-Up Gallery. The new show times will be noon, 1, and 2PM.

On Second Thought, Don’t Act Your Age

“Future Stars Week” and Young Adults Nights take place during the week of July 25. Stars from the AMA’s Junior Program take over all of the venues (even the WC Fields Bar will have a former Junior working behind it). On July 25 and 25, the Castle opens its regular evening time doors to youngsters age 13 and up and the member must be present and remain with their guests. The dress code is in effect and there must be one adult per four young adults. These are very popular nights, so make your reservations now.

Member’s Menu

The Member “Pin Specials” for July are …

Might want to check your dates, there. Or people will be showing up in August for these lectures.

I made it to Soapy Smith Night at the Castle for the fourth year in a row and had a really great time, as usual. Many of the party-goers were in 1890's period costumes, adding to the ambience of the event, which is essentially a raucous gambling night (with "Soapy dollars," not legal tender,) the proceeds going to the Dai Vernon Foundation.

A real treat for me was that Pop Haydn was performing in the Parlour of Prestidigitation. I caught the last show at 12:30 a.m. In spite of the late hours, Pop turned in another great, highly entertaining performance. Pop is an inspiration. After the show, outside the theater, someone in the group said to Pop that he wished he had seen him perform some card magic. Pop went to fetch a deck of cards and invited the folks who were still hanging around to sit at a hallway table to watch him perform an impromptu set. What a great guy.
