Magic Cafe

Has the Magic Cafe disappeared? Or is it just my computer only?

No luck here, either.
Seems to be down at the moment.

"No-Gimmick Vanish of a Website That Messes With You". It's in Harry's Classic Collection, volume 4 I think.

I've been trying to get on for a day or two with no luck.
We have been very lucky here on the Forum so far with the switch to the upgraded software. Fingers crossed.

To my knowledge, "server maintenance" doesn't keep a website down for three days and counting.

As noted above, the error message one gets indicates something far more serious than "server maintenance", and indeed the servers involved aren't Cafe servers at all, they're DNS servers.

It would appear that "the internet" has no idea where the Magic Cafe is.

I was hoping the Café would be up today because it's Steve Brooks birthday today.

Paul. Why are you so obsessive about people's birthdays? I swear that you know the birthday of every single human being on the planet. There must be a trick to it somewhere. Let me try it. Does September 12th 1970 mean anything to you? Incidentally it was a Saturday. That might give you a clue.................................

I think it's just coincidental. I'm not obsessed with people's birthdays.. Facebook reminds me of them.

I have seen evidence in the past that you remember people's birthdays even when they have never been near Facebook! It was wrong of me, however to say that you are "obsessed" with them. You do seem to know whenever they come up though.

Just a quick update - The Magic Café® will be up and running again once we are sure everything is good to go. We had several issues to deal with and sometimes these things do take time. ;)

Roger M. said; "To my knowledge, 'server maintenance' doesn't keep a website down for three days and counting".

No, Roger M., we were NOT doing server maintenance (that would be the job of our data center). FYI. ;)

Paperinik said; "DNS failure, that is pretty bad"

Not really. When you shut your servers off you naturally have DNS failure, but perhaps you no more about what we are doing than we do.

observer said; "No-Gimmick Vanish of a Website That Messes With You. It's in Harry's Classic Collection, volume 4 I think".

You have a great memory.

Barefoot Boy said; "I was hoping the Café would be up today because it's Steve Brooks birthday today".

Thanks for remembering my birthday. :)

Richard Kaufman said; "...."We have been very lucky here on the Forum so far with the switch to the upgraded software. Fingers crossed".

Richard, what we have been dealing with is NOT software related. Just sayin' :)

Anyways, between Café issues and Tenyo Elite its been a busy birthday. Thanks everyone for your concern. As Rocky says; Onward...

I had a psychic vibe that Steve would be here shortly. No doubt my post on Twitter made him scurry over here immediately. After all, I am psychic and know these things. Let us hope it won't be long now. I can't sneak on to a forum if it doesn't even exist. At least Steve found a foolproof way of keeping me out for a few days.

I understand the concept of web-site owners wanting to downplay the seriousness of their technical problems, but I also believe folks in the Genii Forum are intelligent enough to recognize poorly conceived double-speak when they read it.

Certainly, week long down times for web forums can be avoided by planning for such occurrences, and then implementing appropriate back-up and recovery strategies such that being "off the air" when the inevitable hardware or software issues occur lasts only a matter of hours, and certainly not downtime measured in multiple days.

steve Brooks shut down the cafe because greg wilson, an advertiser, insisted upon it after unflattering comments on the WMS review show about his ACAAN pre release.

Don't be silly, Brad. You wouldn't need to shut down a board to deal with that (even if it were true).
And I appreciate Steve coming over here to answer some questions.

Really Brad? That's just ridiculous, even for you - 'nuff said.

At any rate, everything is back up and running - Thanks for your patience everyone. :)

It was a joke.

But given how you and your mods clean up criticism of your advertisers, sanitized the WMS threads, and feed off of newbies hawking barely beta tested pipe dreams of now tired magic plots, it is hardly "ridiculous". It's actually decent summation of some of the most interesting content to have appeared on your site.

Now, don't you have some informed magicians to root out and ban?

But you're not all that hard to find.
Mister Henderson said "root out". You're generally in plain view.

Incidentally, I thought the "ridiculous" comment was a joke.
