The February 2016 Digital Issue of Genii is Now Live for your computer, tablet, and phone. Printed issues are in the mail (we're about 7 days later than normal, so give it a little extra time to arrive in the mail).
My buddy Franz Harary has for the better part of a decade been showing me plans and concept art for some sort of magical club. First he had financing, then he didn’t, then he did, lost it again. When he finally announced last year that construction was commencing on his “House of Magic” it was hard to believe. Located in the newly-built Studio City in Macau, “House of Magic” has multiple venues which are entered though a magical experience. Nearby, an enormous orb costing millions of dollars to construct levitates in the lobby. Franz is usually performing a new even larger version of his “Mega Magic” show in the big theater, while other magicians including Luis de Matos, Danny Cole, James Moore, and Travis Winkler, and others work shifts in the small venues. The whole place is themed with a steampunk décor by some of the best designers who create for theme parks and theaters. It’s $50 million mega dollars of magic and fun, and there was no one better to tell us about it than Luis de Matos, performing in the middle of the madness. It’s a whopping big article about the largest magic venue in the world outside The Magic Castle in Los Angeles.
Magic has been well represented on American television in the past year by the second season of Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Originally running for one season on British TV, which was picked up and run by the CW in the U.S., the series was dropped in the U.K., but the CW enjoyed good enough ratings to commission a second season. The list of all those who appeared over the course of the second series is a Who’s Who of close-up magicians, a quarter of whom fooled Penn & Teller in one way or another. Carl Mercurio documented every episode of the series and has produced for Genii the ultimate guide to Fool Us, season Two.
Our columns alone would make a good magazine: Jim Steinmeyer’s “Conjuring” teaches a unique and very visual way to end the “Cards to Pocket”; Jonathan Pendragon’s “Panmagium” concludes his three-part series on “Sands of the Desert”; Max Maven puts a devious principle to excellent use with a bit of mentalism in “Lost Horizons”: Eugene Burger goes full stop and spends some time contemplating the benefits of “Daydreaming” or flights of fancy in “Eugene’s Notebook”: John Gaughan continues to mine his amazing collection and uncovers Hofzinser’s “Ink to Goldfish” in “Chamber of Secrets”: Helder Guimaraes teaches more of the card technique that will raise your work to a new level in “Invisible Strings”; and if you’re ready for the best version of “Chicago Opener” aka “Red-Hot Mama” you’ve ever seen, then it’s because Tom Stone has returned with his column “Lodestones” to tease and tantalize us for another year; in “Magicana” Andi Gladwin revolves the first part of the column around Dave Rumfeldt’s pseudo card-from-pocket sleight that I saw Larry Jennings use many years ago. Coincidentally, Andi was given several completely different applications by Mike O’Brien and he asked to include the unpublished Jennings effect from many years earlier. All together, with a great Ace production from James Swain, he brings you a great “Magicana” this month. In addition to Jon Racherbaumer’s musing on new books, “Light from the Lamp” brings us reviews from John Lovick, Joe M. Turner, and David Oliver who help you separate the wheat from the chaff.
