Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (December 2015)

Postby Dustin Stinett » December 1st, 2015, 5:12 pm

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas

Of course, the same good have been said in July, what with “early” sales appearing here and there and “Back Friday” starting in August. Be we digress … the holiday season is here. Be it eight days of Hanukkah, twelve days of Christmas, one day of winter solstice or whatever, please to enjoy this wondrous time of year.

The Kids Kick Off the Festivities

Kids’ Day at The Magic Castle is Saturday, December 5. Santa, his elves, and maybe even the missus bring the portable workshop down from the North Pole just for our members and their families. Milk and cookies, ornament making, and all manner of fun starts at 11AM and runs through 2PM. Brunch reservations are not required. And please consider bringing a new unwrapped toy for the Toys For Tots collection also taking place.

Technically, the Kids are Second …

But by the time you read this, there’s a solid chance that the Members-Only Holiday Party on December 2 is booked solid. But call ahead. The Gift Shop is running a 25% discount that night only (in-store only). Such a deal on many stocking stuffers and gifts only available at The Magic Castle. You can even splurge and buy yourself a gift. (The best part of that is unwrapping the “doesn’t say who it’s from” gift on Christmas morning and acting surprised while everyone wonders who got it for you.)

Schedule Notes

The Magic Castle is closed on December 3 for a buyout. And the Castle and the AMA offices will be closed on December 24 and 25 in observance of Christmas.

A Christmas Night-Mare(?) Naaahhhhh

Just a whole lot of fun to be had in the Houdini Séance Room with the non-dining séance with your host Rob Zabrecky. The chills and thrills are on December 7 with four shows: 6, 8, 9:45, and 11PM. $35 a person ($45 includes a souvenir Houdini Séance commemorative coin). Contact AMA Spirit Director Josh Stern at jstern[at]magiccastle[dot]com or at extension 303 for information and availablity.

L.A.’s Cold Snap

We know that what Los Angeles calls “cold” is considered shirt-sleeve weather in other parts of the country, but there are times when cold is cold, and it is the underprivileged who get hit hardest. The Outreach Committee is running its annual “Blankets for Hope Street” initiative. The Hope Street Clinic and California Hospital Medical Center take care of at-risk families. So please bring some new or gently used (and cleaned) blankets the next time you come to the Castle. The valets will accept them and make sure they get where they need to go. Thanks!

And While in the Mood to Give …

Consider giving the most important thing you can: the gift of life. The annual AMA/Red Cross Blood Drive is December 18 in the Inner Circle, 10AM to 3PM. Paul Green is the unofficial and uninvited host (his words!). Sign up online at https://amablooddrivedecember2015.eventbrite.com/ using the password AMABLOOD15. Donors receive a voucher for free lunch at the Castle.

Speaking of lunch …

The Members Only Friday Lunch expands the week of Christmas (12/21) to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Lunch (which more than makes up for be closed on Friday).

We Went from “Ye-hah” to “Fwah-Fwah”

Originally the plan for the AMA New Year’s celebration was a western themed “roundup,” but you can put the crap-kickers back in the closet because it’s black tie now, cowpokes. The Black & White Ball is on the eve of the New Year is $30 per person (up to five in the party; the sixth is $50) and includes four-course Prix Fixe Dinner (with optional wine flight), Midnight Toast with a souvenir champagne flute, a DJ and dancing, a photo booth (these have become quite popular at our events, with folks becoming inventive with their poses) and of course the best magic in the world at The Magic Castle. Contact the reservations desk for availability. This party always sells out, so don’t hesitate.

‘Tis the Season

The AMA’s election season is in full flower. The Boards of Trustees and Directors have seven seats each, and they are all highly contested this year. It’s important for voting members to become familiar with the new nominees and reacquaint with the incumbents. The “Meet the Candidates events are a fine time to do that.

The Board of Directors event will be on January 10 at 1PM (Associate candidates) and 3PM (Regular Member candidates). The Board of Trustees will be on January 31 at 3PM.

Here are your nominees (asterisk denotes incumbent candidate):

Board of Directors Magician Members:

Chip Chalmers*
Donal Chayce
John Gaughan
Rob Gould
Randy Sinnott*
Jim Steinmeyer*
Najee Williams

Board of Directors Associate Members:

Sara Ballantine*
Cathy Haight
Carmen Johnston
Martina Lotun
Alan McFarland
Danny Robinson
Brian Tolman*

Board of Trustees:

Gay Blackstone
Dennis Forel
Crow Garrett
Paul Green
Howard Hamburg
Joan Lawton*
Shoot Ogawa
Tom Ogden
David Perry
Jonathan Pendragon
David Regal*
Daniel Ulin
Mark Wilson*
Jim Yoder

The consensus around the club is—and I agree—that this is one of the most important elections the AMA and The Magic Castle has had in some time. So please self-educate and participate.

Now I’m Hungry …

So it’s the perfect time to list the December Member’s Menu. Remember that the regular dishes are available on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The vegetarian and vegan dishes are available all week.

Dustin:

Are the "Meet the Candidates" events going to be live streamed for us out of towners?

I have not heard any details on that yet. The dates for the event are still being listed as "tentative." I hope so.
