The style of this particular special is more grown-up than many magic specials. Whilst not strictly speaking an "adult" show it's certainly not something especially suitable for your more traditional family (aka kids) audience.

Tom, can it have more sexual content and violence than what's on TV 24 hours a day here? That would be hard to believe.

The way it's shot, the colour pallet, the tone of some of the sequences (scorpions, nearly drowning, people set on fire...) everything about it makes it much more of a night-time show for grown-ups than an evening family show. All the other magic tv shows at the moment are pitching themselves squarely at the early-evening, family-friendly market so it is a smart move on their behalf to differentiate themselves from all the other product on the market.

The 18 to 24 demographic is where the money is, and NBC leads in that category (it doesn't hurt that they have the Super Bowl). The network is second in overall viewership according to Nielsen, so the bottom line is, I suspect someone there knows what they are doing.

I'll go for William Goldman's quote: "Nobody knows anything." He was referring to Hollywood, but to me TV is no different.

Perhaps Goldman had studied Ancient Greek philosophy:

“The only thing that I know is that I know nothing.”

I think perhaps, it might be the ancient television philosophy:

“The only thing that I know is that the viewers know nothing.”
