The December Issue of Genii is Now Live Online

Postby Richard Kaufman » November 16th, 2015, 11:34 pm

The December issue of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine, is now live online and on its way to you in the mail.

(We're in the process of making some technical adjustments, so if you're viewing the December issue on a computer with your browser, you'll need to enter by clicking through the November issue, and then go to the "Issues" tab and you'll find the December issue that way).

There’s no better way than a box full of tricks—it’s just the thing if you know a young person (or a collector) interested in magic and are looking for a reasonably priced holiday gift. Marvin Berglas’s company Marvin’s Magic has just released a real doozy: Marvin’s i♦Magic. It’s a set whose props interact with an app (for your cellphone or tablet) that applies Augmented Reality to them. In other words, it overlays 3D moving visuals onto the props when seen through your cellphone’s camera that produce magical effects. Read all about it and see demonstrations in this issue.
Also, we feature “Out of the Shadows,” on Philippe Beau, who was interviewed for us by Joe Culpepper of Canada. Beau is a cutting-edge magician/shadowgrapher from France, often working in avant-garde productions and bringing magic to other types of shows, such as an opera about the life of Robert-Houdin. An unusual piece and I think you’ll enjoy it.
Famed Japanese magician Maki Kitami died in late summer, and he deserves to be remembered not only for his fame in his native country, but also for his many convention appearances in the United States where he performed the ancient Japanese style of magic known as “Wazuma.” He is memorialized by Yuki Kadoya. *
Our columnists, the best of the best, bring you holiday gifts galore this month beginning with Jim Steinmeyer’s “Conjuring,” which reveals a new type of two-person code. * Helder Guimarães returns with the second column of “Invisible Strings,” this time describing a remarkably elegant switch in the course of a routine which appears simple but is in fact quite rich in mystery, with supplementary videos in our digital edition. * John Gaughan does not serve soup with his ladle, but playing cards, in his “Chamber of Secrets.” * “Cardopolis” finds David Britland revisiting Ted Annemann’s “Nightmare”—a fascinating trick, long buried, now dissected. * Eugene Burger muses on circles and other rings, some of which link, in “Eugene’s Notebook,” which also includes a video in our digital edition. * The second part of Jonathan Pendragon’s analysis of “Sands of the Desert” continues with a peek into dark swirling waters where small bags of sand are hidden. * In his first “Lost Horizons” written sans appendix, Max Maven looks back to Hofzinser, McCaffrey, and Joseph for an intriguing mystery. * Andi Gladwin brings us three fine tricks in this month’s “Magicana,” accompanied by a “Modern Magicana” video in our digital edition. * Our “Knights at The Magic Castle” columnist Daniel Ulin returns from his one-month hiatus feeling fresh, newly engaged (congratulations), and with all the news about the only real home magicians have, located in sunny Los Angeles. It includes a video interview with Paul Green in our digital edition. * All things come to an end, and magic dealer, demonstrator extraordinaire, and all around swell fellow Al Cohen writes his last column, “Memoirs of a Magic Dealer” this month. Al’s wonderful reminiscences have run in Genii on and off for many years now. When I first asked him to write the column, Al thought about it and said, “I might have a few interesting stories to tell.” He certainly did. I wish Al and his wife Rita the best of luck in their new home in Florida.
