Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (November 2015)

Postby Dustin Stinett » November 1st, 2015, 1:45 am

50-something Shopping Days Left

In case you have not noticed, the Christmas shopping season started in July, but it is getting down to crunch time. I can tell you that a new deck of Academy of Magical Arts playing cards (to go along with The Magic Castle cards) are scheduled to hit The Magic Castle Gift Shoppe soon. There are all kinds of cool stocking stuffers and other Magic Castle goodies there, and I think at pretty decent prices, all available online. Check it out: http://www.magiccastle.com/gift_shop/

Last Call

Pop Haydn and Chef Anton’s “School for Scoundrels” has been a fixture here for 20 years. It caught many of us by surprise, then, when they announced that the 20th SFS they are doing in November will be the LAST one(s) ever at The Magic Castle! They will be joined by Bob Sheets as they teach the three most popular games of [you ain’t gotta] chance used by street hustlers: the Three Shell Game, 3-Card Monte, and Fast & Loose. Two classes over two weekends: November 7 & 8 and 14 & 15. See http://scoundrelsstore.com/ for registration and details.

Thank a Vet

Veterans Day is November 11 and that makes the week of November 9 Veterans Week at The Magic Castle. With just one exception, every performer working that week has served in uniform. The exception, Michael Finney, has a son who is in active duty plus he performs for veterans and those serving all around the world, so the booker cuts him some slack. See the schedule below for the full list.

Madame Herrmann Perk

Margaret Steele has done a boatload of work on the legendary Adelaide Herrmann, widow of Alexander Herrmann. This includes publishing the lost (then found) autobiography of the Grand Dame of Magic. Ms. Steele will be presenting an all-members-welcome perk on Madame Herrmann on Tuesday, November 10. 8PM in the Inner Circle.

They Are Appreciated …

The annual Employees Appreciation Night is November 23. The club is closed to public traffic as the employees get the run of the joint as management and member volunteers serve them for a change. Members only. You can enjoy the buffet set out for the staff, but it will cost you $20.

One Word: Shimada

The 24th is also a members-only night, and this one features a performance by the legendary Shimada in the Palace of Mystery. He will be joined by Max Maven. Reservations are required. Get them NOW.

The Castle Will Be Closed … Thankfully

In celebration of Thanksgiving, The Magic Castle and the AMA offices will be closed on Thursday, November 26.

Your Dues at Work

The Magician Members Only Lectures has five lectures this month, which works out to no holiday rest for the weary. Here’s the lineup (and as usual, it is impressive!):

11/1 – Francis Menotti
11/8 – Dave Kaplan
11/15 – Jason England
11/22 – Will Houstoun
11/29 – Michael Vincent

Speaking of Dues …

November 1 officially kicks off “Dues Season.” Our intrepid Director of Membership, Trish Alaskey, has created a schedule for her and her staff that will ensure that there is someone able to take your calls all week long during the months of November and December (except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day of course)—and that includes Sundays. This will make sure that all of you who prefer to renew over the phone will be helped in a timely manner (and you’ll get your 2016 stuff that much quicker too). Of course you can always pay online as well. Dues are due by December 31. Look over my past installments of this here report, look at all the great things happening at The Magic Castle, and tell me it’s not a bargain!

Newsletter News

As you might know by now, yours truly is the editor of the newsletter. Please be sure to download it! This month has a Q&A with Marty Rosenstock on the changes to the Palace and Parlour waiting areas as well as a special photo and short tribute to Harry and Eva Fay Anderson in “–30–“ (which is the official name of the new afterword in the newsletter). And more changes in the publication are in the works for next year, so pay your dues and read the newsletter!
