There's a great double standard here.

If you're pirating magic instructional videos, it's REALLY bad.

If you're pirating magic performance videos, it's REALLY great.

So you should be fine posting your pirated videos, as it is performances.

Horrah for hypocrisy!

I must say this sounds like a marvellous collection. There is actually a video on you tube of Jean Valton whom I had never heard of before. I thought he was absolutely marvellous.

I am particularly interested in Toreno. I saw his act in Murray's Cabaret club in the sixties and met with him afterwards. Some other hot shot manipulator whose name I cannot recall was visiting too and both of them talked together with me stuck in the middle for hours on end. They talked for hours and hours about their very short silent acts and it was apparent to me that although a lot of it went over my head (it was not my field after all) it was apparent that they both treated magic as a real art.

I still remember four things from the conversation. One was a tip on applying fanning powder by spraying it on the cards. You make a fan and spray the stuff along the fan, then make a fan from the other end and do the same thing. Then you do two reverse fans and repeat the procedure. The whole procedure was done in about 30 seconds or so and the cards were treated perfectly. It was a hell of a lot quicker than all the other methods I had come across. In fact I told Alan Alan about and he told me never to tell a soul about it.

The second thing I recall from the conversation was that Toreno said, "I never smile when I work. That is until they applaud. When they applaud I will smile. That is their reward for applauding"

The third thing I remember was his criticism of Fred Kaps. He seemed to think that Fred Kaps wasn't getting that much work at the time and explained his reasoning something like this, "Fred cannot make up his mind whether he is working for magicians or if he wants to work for laymen. He is making a mistake by trying to do both. He should pick one or the other if he wants to be successful"

The last thing I remember from the all night conversation where I hardly said a word was his advice about getting work. He stated that it was not so much the act that was so important as to how well you got on with the booker. He said that there were many acts as good as he was (and he was very good-world class in fact) but his secret was the good relationships he built up with the night club owners.

I have been racking my brains to remember who the other world class performer was that was there that night. I suppose he must have been working in London too. I know he was from Scandinavia just like Toreno.

This must have been about fifty years ago when I was working the night clubs in London too. I was no Toreno though. I wonder if he is still alive.................
