Handsome Jack Fools 'em

Postby Dustin Stinett » July 21st, 2015, 1:38 am

Congratulations to Genii's own John "Handsome Jack" Lovick on fooling Penn & Teller on "P&T: Fool Us" tonight.

Yes, that's Harry Anderson's torn & restored banknote "grappler" equipment that Jack acquired from The Hat his own self. But Jack's superb routine is all Jack. (And Jack can correct me if I'm wrong, but Harry didn't have the strong magical blow off at the end; He ended on the laugh.)

Well done sir!

Yes, I agree, a great, very cool and confident performance. And forgive me, but I couldn't help but wonder if that's in John's book...

Also, it seemed that tonight's show was the one that was recorded first, based on the showgirls' entrance and Jonathan Ross' opening remarks.

If it appears, I suspect that it will be in the same manner that it appears in Wise Guy, without a lot of detail. The prop is unique as far as I know. John purchased it from Harry. It's not like you can order one at the magic shop!

Oops, I'm afraid I was unclear with my reference...I was referring to the torn and restored bit and "Switch"... ;)

Don't recall that it in Switch. However, I would have to go back and check, but I seem to recall that John tipped it during his Penguin Live lecture last year. I know he lectured the torn and restored handbill, but can't remember if it included the very end.

All in all, a great performance by John. Still one of my very favorite performers and lecturers. BRAVO!

The entrance with the showgirls was not the first one shot.

The shooting schedule was dictated by the availability of the participants. The individual segments are edited together to provide the most variety and to fit within the forty-two minutes of content.

John Lovick did a great job; he was also a delight to work with.

For those like me, who aren't able to watch it when it is broadcast, here is the performance.

And I loved the shout-out to P. T. Selbit ("Mighty Cheese Whiz").

Call me fooled. After all these years I had know idea that John performed under the stage name of "Handsome Jack."

I have read Mr. Lovick for years but had never seen Handsome Jack. It was strong magic from a funny, original, well-defined character. (I also liked the chop cup load technique in the intro).

Jack is great. He has THE single best premise for introducing the Spirit Slates that you'll ever want to steal.

His web site has a great video of one Jack's performance at the Castle.

Really great stuff!

I wrote this on my Facebook. What is most impressive is how you made the "Grappler" your own. No mean feat (I almost wrote "feet") when the other person we are talking about is Harry Anderson. As far as the secret to restored paper, I don't want to know, I love being fried.
