Mat Franco just released his trailer for his upcoming Vegas show ...
Very unique - and definitely playing to the 'human connection'

Re: Mat Franco - The Human Connection
Interesting, but not "very unique." Nothing is "very unique." It is either unique or not. (Sorry Craig, that phrase is my biggest bugaboo, and I am guilty of using it in some of my early writing.)
I'd never heard of the Linq Hotel and Casino, so my initial thought was "off the strip." Wrong. A little search turns out that it was the Imperial Palace and is now a Caesar's property, right in the heart of the strip.
Best to Mr. Franco (and he's opening in time for those going to MAGIC Live to perhaps get a look-see at his show)!

Re: Mat Franco - The Human Connection
Hi Dustin
This is a controversial subject.
According to The Oxford English Dictionary, since the middle of the 19th century unique has “had a tendency to take the wider meaning of ‘uncommon, unusual, remarkable’"
They go on to say:
"Words like unique have a core sense but they often also have a secondary, less precise sense: in this case, the meaning ‘very remarkable or unusual’, as in a really unique opportunity. In its secondary sense, unique does not relate to an absolute concept, and so the use of submodifying adverbs is grammatically acceptable."
Common usage no longer sees unique as only being a single absolute.
The joys of language
But on to Mat - I really look forward to hearing how his show develops ...

Re: Mat Franco - The Human Connection
The Las Vegas beat writer for the OC Register has some nice things to say in her August 2nd column about Mat Franco (without seeing the show, which hasn't opened), and Franco's face appeared on the front page--albeit below the fold--of the paper's "Travel" section. The headline is not about Franco, but you have to read the piece to know that. So, with his photo and a headline that reads, "Competition is heavy, but could there be a new best show in Vegas?" I would call that a nice piece of press!

Re: Mat Franco - The Human Connection
paid by the word? or perhaps not taught to investigate adjectives?
Mundus vult decipi -per Caleb Carr's story Killing Time
Re: Mat Franco - The Human Connection
Simply exploring one of the figures of rhetoric, dear boy.
The above is an example of a pleonasm dontcha know...
However if you're paying by the word it would be churlish to refuse.
Andrew
(Although the casual reader would be forgiven for thinking it's Jon)

I think you can get ointment to help relieve pleonasm.
Another one that makes me chuckle is "reversing backwards".
As we know reversing can be tricky, but reversing forwards is an art in itself. A very unique art in fact.

Continuing on the topic of Mat Franco (while staying away from the travesty that is what's happening to the English language), there is a nice piece in the Las Vegas Sun on young Mr. Franco. Please to enjoy:

Anyone at Magic Live get to see the show ...

"I started realizing pop culture. And I started realizing what I was doing, magic, was framed much differently from everything that was popular around me. Like music. Why weren't musicians wearing this (tuxedo) on the Video Music Awards? ... Why is this so outdated?
"It was about that time I threw the tails out and tried to figure out who I was."

Craig, please do not post large chunks of copyrighted text here. The Vegas papers are notorious for lawsuits for someone pasting their articles into forums or blogs.

Reviews starting to trickle in ...
Nice one here

"... Add to that Franco’s personality, and I found myself more than drawn into Franco’s entertaining and magical world. I found myself feeling invested, as if it were my world too ... Does Las Vegas need another magic show? In the case of Mat Franco – Magic Reinvented Nightly, the answer is yes. "

"Sharp and telegenic, Franco should only grow as a stage personality ... I was taken by his personality, passion and clear focus on what he wanted to put onstage. His close-up work is masterful, and I believe that he could be a star: A Strip newcomer who has the heart and soul of a classic magician. Of course, all of that might not fit on a marquee, but it is accurate."
