Labyrinth is Coming!

Postby Richard Kaufman » July 2nd, 2015, 1:43 pm

I'm pleased to announce that I will be doing a limited edition reprint of Stephen Hobbs' underground, and fabulous, magazine from the 1990s: Labyrinth. Less than 100 copies of each issue were originally printed, so the material will be new to virtually all of you.

The book is 456 pages, hardcover with a 3-piece binding, printed on acid free paper and Smyth Sewn for lay-flat reading.

I'm going to print only 1,000 copies of the regular edition. The price is $60. You can pre-order until August 14 for the pre-publication price of $50. I will have copies available for sale at MAGIC Live.

The books should ship the third week of August (it is already at the printer). This book is excluded from our "3 for 2" offer.

There is also a deluxe edition, limited to 100 copies, which will come in a slipcase and is also signed and numbered by Stephen Hobbs. This sells for $100 and will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis. These will ship a week or two after the regular edition.

Now here's the important part: this does not appear on the Kaufman and Company Website yet. You will be able to order starting Monday July 6 (not before!) by calling, faxing, or emailing the Genii office with your name, address, phone number, email address, and credit card information.

Please add $20 shipping worldwide (outside the US).

And you can also pay by PayPal: moobooks@verizon.net
Please make sure to include the item you're ordering, your name, address, telephone number, and email.
Thanks.

Fax: 301-652-8035

If you wish to send a check (drawn on a US bank) or money order, please make it out to "Richard Kaufman," include all the information requested above, and send it to:

I'm looking forward to this. Labyrinth had a lot of good material in it.

But I'm also glad I never yielded to the temptation to spend $400-500 (or even more) for a set of the magazines.

That sounds strangely like a certain Seinfeld episode.

Money sent and looking forward to Labyrinth............at last.
Have a couple of issues and they only gave me an appetite for the rest. Thanks you, Richard, for reproducing this series of magic.

Cheers from the Emerald Isle.

This isn't wrong, but it isn't quite right either. At least two issues went into reprint. The Alain Nu issue and the Aaron Fisher issue were issued as lecture notes for the respective magicians. They are reprints of the issue, with new covers. Magicpedia says that there were 100 of the Alain Nu reprint, and I don't know but suspect the Fisher one was similarly done.

In the grand scheme, it makes no difference -- they are all tough to come by, and while I've got most of the magazines, I've also already ordered the book.

I have no idea if Stephen Hobbs is aware that these issues were reprinted. He never mentioned it to me, nor did I know about it.

Hobbs authorized and published the reprints. He also did a reprint for me of a single routine for the purpose of selling it at lectures.

I'm in for one as this seems like a fine value, especially at the $50 pre-pub price.

Arrived in Huntsville today. This is a hefty book -- well over 400 pages. And it is full of good magic. If you have any copies of the journal, you know what you will be getting. The book pages are facsimiles of the originals. It's a nice looking book (although I was expecting the cover to be glossy with this design, or maybe a DJ with the picture).

Hobbs wanted the original logo to be used for the book, which we did. Sometimes I do dustjackets, other times not. I thought this book, being a journal, would do well in a 3-piece binding. Looks pretty swift to me!

I really like dust jackets--but only the glossy, liquid coated ones. (The plain paper dustjackets just disintegrate over time.)

Very looking forward to my copy of Labyrinth!

This is an update for those who paid for deluxe editions of Labyrinth (which is a reminder to me why I stopped doing deluxe editions for many years): the company subcontracted by my printer to make the slipcases took a month after receiving the specs to deliver a sample.

Sample was approved.

The slipcases should arrive at my printer on September 1. Books will be inserted, shrinkwrapped, and then sent to the fulfillment warehouse. They should be in the mail by September 7.

I am always bothered by the fact that the absurd amount of time it takes to have slipcases made causes the people who paid the most for an item to be among the last to receive it. For that I apologize.

When we rely on the whole publishing process we rely on so many different people along the way. This means that there will inevitably be delays and other unexpected occurrences every so often before we see the end product.

When we rely on Richard Kaufman as author/editor/publisher, we rely on his knowledge, skill, and experience. This means that the end product will inevitably always be worth any such wait.

Well, I just got home from Tokyo yesterday. There was a box with some empty slipcases here, so I assume that the rest of the slips have been stuffed and sent to the fulfillment warehouse (at last!). If they haven't been mailed out already, then they will this week.

Slipcases are a big fat pain in the ass, I must say. My Tenyo books have been delayed over a month now while the printer tries to make a slipcase to my satisfaction.

How long ago were the preorders for the regular edition shipped?

I live in Canada and Labyrinth appears to have gotten lost in the maze.

Thanks.

Coincidentally I contacted the Genii office yesterday and Margaret informed me my copy was shipped on August 20th. It has still to arrive in England. Canada is a lot nearer to the US.

The mail to Canada has always been awful, and more so in recent years. Everything has been mailed out, now we just have to wait for the birds to land.

Thanks for your patience.
