Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (May 2015)

Postby Dustin Stinett » May 1st, 2015, 7:02 pm

And AaWay They Go*

Derby Day (as in the Kentucky Derby) is this Saturday, May 2 at 1PM in the Inner Circle. Prices range from $15 to $45 depending on your level of intended imbibing and what’s covering your head. Contact the Castle’s Track Steward Ben Roman at broman[at]magiccastle[dot]com for details or to RSVP (required).

*When will SoCal’s very own Trevor Denman get to call that race? C’mon …!

Monti in May

Joe Monti’s free “Session” for May will be held on the 6th at 8PM in the Peller. Magician Members only please!

Books. We Got Lots of Books

The month of May will feature not one but two book signing Member Perks. First up is R. Paul Wilson who will do a signing and Q&A on his new work, The Art of the Con. The scam starts at 8PM in the Inner Circle on Monday May 11.

On Wednesday the 13th May Genii cover boy Steve Spill will chat with Jon Armstrong about his life, career, and of course his new memoir, I Lie for Money. (Copies of this brand new book should be available there for purchase and autographing.) The lying commences at 8PM in the Inner Circle.

All members are welcome at both of these events.

Putin’ on the Ritz

It’s black tie time (though I will likely be wearing my favorite red and gold Oxxford number). The 47th Annual Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show will be held on Sunday, May 17 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Hosted by multiple Academy Award Winning magician Steve Valentine, the show starts at 7PM. Schmoozing and pre-show cocktails start at 5:30. The after party will be held at The Magic Castle this year and is included with the price of the show ticket. Tickets are still available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/the-academy ... orcatid=53
See you there!

Closed (For Good Reason)

Because of the Awards Show After-Party, the Magic Castle is closed the evening of May 17. To the best of my knowledge, the clubhouse will be open for brunch, but since reservations are required, you’ll be told for sure—but I’m pretty sure it’s open.

Not So Young No More

In its 31st season(!) in 1987, the television program “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” featured a made-for-TV movie titled “Young Harry Houdini.” It starred Wil Wheaton in the title role and was about the youth of Eric Weiss. The fine character actor Jeffrey DeMunn narrates and plays the adult Houdini, and the incomparable Jose Ferrer portrays Dr. Grimaldi, the impresario whose show young Harry runs away to join. Billy McComb also has a small part (as “The Great Merlin” who inspires young Eric) in this dandy little romp.

On Tuesday, May 26 at 8PM a screening of this movie will take place in the Inner Circle. Wil Wheaton will attend and will be available for a Q&A after the movie. (Questions should probably be about this movie and his association with magic and not “The Big Bang Theory.”) All members are welcome.

Vee Vant Your Blood (“Need Your Blood” actually)

Looking ahead to June 5, the Red Cross and the AMA will be holding a blood drive from 10AM to 4PM in the Inner Circle. Contact our resident Vampire Coordinator Ben Roman to schedule an appointment. Page 17 of the May Newsletter also has a link and password to the website. Thanks in advance for your blood!

Lecture Lineup Card: May

May 3, the Flicking Fingers. Note that this lecture will be held in the Palace to accommodate more of you.

May 10 and 17, there are no lectures on those dates. You will have plenty to work through after the Flicking Fingers are through with you anyway. And then, to make up for that …

May 24 is the incomparable Peter Samelson and then on …

May 31 the unbelievable Denny Haney.

(Are you non-members who live in and around the greater Los Angeles area getting why membership in the AMA is a bargain? We’re just over a quarter into the year and just a few of the folks who have lectured here include Daryl, Jeff McBride, Karl Hein, and Lukas. This year we have had perks with Dick Cavett, Mike Caveney, and Michael Carbonaro. We have an incredible library of books, periodicals, lecture notes, manuscripts, and video [all shepherded by Bill Goodwin, himself a fine practitioner of sleight of hand and a wealth of knowledge]. And not to mention all of the incredible talent that Jack Goldfinger books into our showrooms each and every week. And the Boss would kill me if I didn’t mention that AMA membership also includes a digital subscription to Genii: The Conjurors’ Magazine. Did I say “bargain”? Membership in the AMA is a downright steal. The AMA is only accepting Regular Magician Memberships at the moment, but the “audition” [interview] process is not as traumatic as you might think. Our Member Services Manager is the One and Only Trish Alaskey. Call or email for details on how to become a member of the Academy of Magical Arts: 323-851-3313, ext. 301 / talaskey[at]magiccastle[dot]com.)

Schedule Note

Tonight’s (Monday) Member’s Perk with R. Paul Wilson begins at 10PM in the Inner Circle, not 8PM as previously reported. (Nothing stops you from showing up at 8PM, you’ll just wonder where everyone else is. They’ll be watching him perform in the Close-Up Gallery, hence the reason for the Perk’s late start.)

Spill Spills

Steve Spill will be spilling all at his book signing and Q&A this Wednesday in the Inner Circle at 8PM.
