Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (April 2015)

Postby Dustin Stinett » April 1st, 2015, 10:33 pm

No Foolin’ (as far as you know)

Today, the AMA Powers That Be emailed the membership with the following news:

“We are super excited to announce the sale of the AMA, The Magic Castle, and our property to a mega powerhouse company that secures our future in Hollywood.”

The email subject line: “AMA April Newsletter – AMA/Magic Castle SOLD to Walt Disney Company!* – Ready to Download!”

Other news in the newsletter includes Jackanese: The Life Lessons of Jack Goldfinger, now on sale in the gift shop (anyone who knows our Entertainment Director will not need this, but it is recommended reading for everyone else). “Free Filet Fridays” is announced (and I’m sure will actually happen when hades reaches 32 degrees). There will also be a new membership level for our pets, shrunken heads in the library, and apparently I am off the hook for my assigned duty for the now cancelled award show.

Well played ladies and gentlemen … well played.

*No joke: Just a few years ago real news of this nature would have thrilled me. But after what Disney did to Club 33, I don’t want them anywhere near my clubhouse.

Be Alert (because we need more Lerts)

Members: check the website or the newsletter for details on how to receive timely text alerts regarding capacity and other issues.

Things Will be Hoppin’ on Sunday the 5th…

That’s because the Easter Bunny will make his annual appearance at the Magic Castle starting at 10:30AM. Photos, egg hunt, face painting, and other fun and frivolity will ensue. Brunch reservations are not required for this free event.

Choose, Select, Support, Back, or just plain Vote

Final voting for the 2014 AMA Awards (to be presented at the Awards Show on May 17) commences on April 13 and lasts through the 27th. Watch your email for your online voting code or vote in the Library if you do not have access.

Daryl, Daryl, Daryl, Daryl, and Daryl

That same week (the week of April 13) Daryl will be making the trek down from the North Pole, or wherever the heck he resides all year long, and will take complete control of the Parlour of Prestidigitation (early and late shifts), perform close-up during Friday Lunch, as well as doing both Saturday and Sunday Brunch shows in the Parlour and, if that’s not enough, he’ll be lecturing on Sunday the 19th. (And be sure to tip him well after he delivers your car at the valet station.) Oh, and the other performers that week are pretty good too, including Krisan, Rudolpho, Ardan James, Rob Zabrecky, Tina Lenert, Doc Eason, Bruce Gold, and Dave Cox.

Such a Deal!

The spring Swap Meet will be held on Saturday, April 18 starting at 9AM. Members enter for free and non-members, who are encouraged to attend as well, pay just $8 to enter. Such a deal we have for you!

A Special Two Hours on Now and at the Hour

There will be a special Q&A and screening Member Perk on April 22. I will let the copywriter give the fine details:

“What does a boy do when he’s raised by a parent forever changed by war? He retreats into a world of a magic. Now and at the Hour is the semi-autobiographical-magical-tale of what it was like for Bay Area magician and solo artist, Christian Cagigal, to be raised by his father, a Vietnam vet afflicted with PTSD and Schizophrenia, and how that inspired and pushed Cagigal into realms of magic, mystery and imagination. Now and at the Hour weaves memory, mind reading, monologues and theatre into an intimate, highly interactive, and altogether unnerving magical experience. Now and a the Hour is the documentary-performance film of the live show of the same name, directed by international award winning filmmaker, H.P. Mendoza.”

8PM in the Inner Circle. All members welcome.

I’m gonna be on television, I’m gonna be on television …

The Magic Castle will be on the Esquire Network’s television program, “Best Bars in America” on April 29. Check your local listings.

The Flag is Up

Looking ahead to May, note that the Castle’s “Kentucky Derby Day” will be on May 2nd, which, coincidently, is Kentucky Derby Day. Price and other details will be forthcoming, but ladies, get you hats ready.

More in May

Cinco de Mayo will be the lunch theme on Uno de Mayo. There will be a couple of book signings in May: R. Paul Wilson on the 11th and Steve Spill on the 13th. And of course the annual Academy of Magic Arts Awards Show will be held at the beautiful Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on May 17. Produced by Max Maven and hosted by Steve Valentine, tickets are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/the-academy ... orcatid=53

Just in from the Academy of Magical Arts:

THIS JUST IN FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND MILT LARSEN:

The Academy of Magical Arts is pleased that they have reached a negotiated settlement with the club's founder, Milt Larsen, and his company, Magic Castles Incorporated, which owns the license to the name Magic Castle. This agreement, which carefully plans for 25 years in the future and even beyond, has been arranged to assure the success of our club, and the future of our club. The Magic Castle and the Academy of Magical Arts have formed an important association over the last 52 years, and today's negotiated settlement provides the road map for the continuing tradition for this popular Hollywood landmark, and the world's famous club for magicians.

Choose, Select, Support, or Maybe Just Vote Before the April 27 Deadline

AMA Members: Don’t forget to vote for those performers that you believe deserve to be honored with a John Gaughan Magic Wand at this year’s Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show which, out of pure coincidence, will be held this year on Sunday May 17 at the beautiful Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. In a further coincidence, tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at: http://www.ticketmaster.com/the-academy ... orcatid=53
Nonmembers as well as the public is cordially invited to enjoy the show. So if you think you will be in the vicinity of 8440 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, California (coincidently the address of the Saban Theatre) at 7 o’clock p.m. on Sunday May 17, then by all means get yourself a ticket or two and enjoy the show. TV Notes

If you are among the fifty* or so people who actually have the Esquire Network on your system, The Magic Castle will be making an appearance on its "Best Bars in America" television program tomorrow night (Wednesday 4/29) at 9PM/8PM CT. To see if you have the ever popular Esquire Network, go the link below, enter your ZIP code and your provider.

http://tv.esquire.com/channelfinder

If you do not have access, it appears that their website does stream their programming over the Internet for free, but you have to bake cookies or something.

*Okay, to be fair, it appears that the network has about a 60% penetration among those households with cable/satellite access. Tune in!
