All very strong contenders. It is an honor for each of them to be included in this company.

Congratulations to all!

Don't they just shuffle 'round the same folks into different categories each year??

They're trying to remedy that, Andrew, however the local performers are friends with lots of the AMA members, and see them often while hanging around at the Castle.

Even though I'm a Lifetime member of the AMA, I do not vote because I have seen virtually none of these performers at these particular performances. I wonder how many other members can make the same statement?

One solution would be to bring back the "Visiting Magician" category.

One thing that is particularly bothersome, and seems to exacerbate the situation, is seeing the same names in so many different categories. I think a rules change should be considered that would allow someone to be eligible in only one category each year. That would open up room for lots more people.

I nominate Matt Field. No category. I just think he should be nominated.

I never vote for Lecturer because, except maybe one or two a years, I do not attend lectures.

While I do not get up there as much as I like, I do feel that I get up there enough, and have enough knowledge of the performers, to make an educated decision. That most of the individuals that I have tried to nominate over the years rarely get nominated I think--hope--shows that I don't just have a bias for my friends.

Oh, and I second the nomination of Matt Field.

I'm in the same dog-paddling boat as RK: I never vote because I haven't seen any performances at the Castle, even though I know most of the nominees and I'm a Lifetime Member like Richard. I also agree with him that there should be a category called BEST VISITING MAGICIAN.

Other categories :D

BEST MOST-FREQUENTLY-NOMINATED-WITHOUT-WINNING AWARD
BEST ACT DEFYING OR NOT FITTING INTO ANY CATEGORY AWARD

THE MATT FIELD CONGENIAL UBIQUITY FELLOWSHIP
THE MAGICIAN OUTLIER FELLOWSHIP

Onward….

The Awards were created when the Castle, performance area, and membership numbers were much smaller. There have been attempts in the past to alter the process and awards given.

The main problem is that we are a performance art: we live to be "live." There is no way of seriously quantifying any achievement not universally experienced. We can't "live feed" the shows (Really bad idea for reasons beyond theft of material and inability to control reuse) because that is how important the "live" experience is.

But, how do you limit? Can't. We can't limit this any more than any local, state or federal election can be limited to those whom have actually read the initiatives to be voted on or understand them any better than their elected representatives; reductio ab absurdum, no one would be able to vote.

As an out of state member, I also don't vote for that very reason.

I note in that in the latest newsletter, Ms. Larsen is urging members to vote. Does anyone know what the typical membership voting participation rate is for these awards?

I third the nomination of Matt Field. I also think we should have a category for Bar Magician.

As Matt's campaign manager, let me say that a vote for Matt is a vote for killer effects, a vote for an island of deception in a sea of tawdry methods that wouldn't fool a mongoose, a vote for more tricks using that secret thing from World World II that even now we can't talk about.

So, dump The Who, we will get fooled again and Matt will be doin' the foolin'.

I'd like to thank all the little people who gave me this award in the future.
