Richard,

You've hit on the one problem I have with David's publication schedule. By the time each book comes out and we spend the proper years digesting the information, we'll be dead!

I personally don't plan to be dead, but can't speak for anyone else. Sometimes life gets in the way.

I think it was Woody Allen who was asked how, given his many achievements, he would like to achieve immortality.

'By not dying' was his response.

For Larry (and anyone else waiting patiently for Volume Two of the Vernon biography), although it may appear that our "publishing schedule" has been sporadic, we have been busy.

Since Part One of Vernon was published in 2006, we have written the Zarrow book, assembled Revelation for Mike Caveney (with some substantial new Vernon-related content), Spins and Needles (the Magic of Allan Slaight), draft chapters for a Del Ray book (all of which, including my research, was turned over to the subsequent author), Slaight: Off Hand (the biography of Allan Slaight), a substantial article on Max Malini for Genii, fifteen issues of Magicol that have included an extensive article on Erdnase and a massive profile of Paul Fox, and co-ordinated the publication of a few other titles - The Essential Stewart James, How Gambler's Win, A Grand Expose, and A Cut Above. So, although writing and publishing is just a sideline, I'd like to think that our publications have been anything but sporadic.

Still, I am on Vernon Part Two. (A graphic novel I have written about Houdini will most likely make its appearance, however, before either the Vernon book or the second volume of The Experts are published.)

In the interim, I do hope that you enjoy The Experts at the Card Table.

Hi Joe

We are waiting on the slipcases and once they are complete (very soon, I am told) both the books and the cases will be shipped to Toronto for the hand-assembly work. Then, they will be packed and prepped for mailing. So, we are still aiming for a July ship date for the Limited Editions.

Regular editions are now shipping and I've been receiving reports from the pre-publication buyers that books are now arriving throughout the USA.

Thanks for your patience. We are almost there. I will update you when we have more news.

Best,

Julie

If David only had one more Julie, he could not only get the second volume of the Vernon book done, but also Karr's Martin Gardner book and Richard's Jennings book.

I've just ordered this book and can't wait to read it. As someone who's slowly working his way through The Expert at the Card Table, I'm sure David's experience and insight will be invaluable to me. For that, I'm willing to pay high shipping charges. :D

I remember watching David demo some of these techniques at the International Magic Convention/Ron's Day a few years ago and was blown away by his technique. I also recall watching his brilliant egg bag routine, and a stunning performance of Ross Bertram's "Five-Zero-Five", which I've wanted to learn ever since.

Marty

P.S. If anyone is interested in my journey through Erdnase, you can read about it here:

Mr. Ben,

Take your time to do the things right. For me is not a problem because the contents of two books that you want to publish are enough interesting.

I know your work and how it is done and I can asure that will be the best way for all of us.

I met for the first time at the Escorial and Juan Tamariz told me how much you work for the magicians and magic comunity.

Our best wishes from Barcelona-Spain my friend.

Sincerely,

F. Amílcar Riega i Bello.

David Ben wrote:Volume One is a restructuring and substantial editing of the Card Table Artifice section of The Expert at the Card Table. The material is presented in a new schematic order, one that I believe presents the information, and system, with greater clarity. Marshall Smith's illustrations have been discarded, and replaced with over 750 photographs by Julie Eng of my hands performing virtually everything in that section.

Volume Two will be my annotations - a meditation really - on the content of Volume One, insights based on nearly 40 years of my study of the material, and my work with or on, among others, Ross Bertram, Herb Zarrow, and Dai Vernon. The goal is not to duplicate the technical notes in other annotated copies, except as points for departure for additional commentary.

Volume Three will explore gaps in Erdnase, and how others, particularly Dad Stevens and Dai Vernon, filled the void. So this will include exhaustive treatments on pull-out shuffles, push-through shuffles, full-deck false shuffles, table shifts, second deals and hand-mucking. It will also explore advanced work on the Beanshooter and "Bug", as developed by Ross Bertram.

All of the Stevens material will work its way into Volume Three.

I have been advised to divide the material into three volumes because it is too much information to absorb at one time. You can't really, in my opinion, do the Stevens work justice, for example, until you have a thorough understand of the information in Erdnase, the gaps in Erdnase, and what has been developed - directly or indirectly - as a result.

Hope this answers your question.

Did these 3 volumes ever get published? if so where can i get them?

Many thanks

I really enjoyed David Ben’s Penguin lecture. Wonder if the Dai Vernon book part 2 will be out soon?

According to other discussions, David & Julie have been working to get the Johnny Thompson book out early this year.

I am waiting for Vernon Vol2 as well. The first volume was excellent.

Even if you're not an Erdnase acolyte, the first volume of The Experts at the Card Table, is an amazing publication. The production values are stellar and the photos are astounding. The information is platinum grade. Anyone with an interest in card magic should have this book.

Incidentally, I am not Erdnase nor is any member of my family going back five generations.

That's good to hear about the Vernon bio. The first book was so good, hard to have to wait this long for the second. I asked David at the last Genii Con and he thought it would be a while, but Richard would be more in the loop than me.
