Re: Randi article in The Telegraph
I've always thought Randi was a lot of hot air most of the time. At a lecture he gave in Toronto, to a mostly sympathetic audience, I asked him if the standards he applied to others should be applied to him since he was making many wild claims without any evidence (e.g., X is harming Y by doing Z)—this got a chorus of boos from the audience and no real answer from Randi.
He's a genius!? It's like the kids at the Apple store, also tagged with the word "genius"--if all that's genius, we need a new word to describe what Einstein was.
However, as a promoter, as a performer, as a personality, there is no question that Randi is a genius. He's kept a career going and high profile longer than almost anyone else (well, Kreskin has to be on that list too)--and to a certain extent, Randi has simply followed the formula Houdini provided. Whether or not, his fame will last as long, is for now an unanswerable question.
