F.R. Ritter Book

Postby Geno Munari » December 4th, 2014, 5:31 am

I just wanted the Genii board members to know that I am releasing a hardcover limited edition of F. R. Ritter's Advantage Card Playing and Draw Poker hopefully before Christmas. There will be only 300 copies of this extremely rare book available in this release. I will post details about the price and release date in the marketplace as soon as possible.

Well this is a welcome announcement.

For fans, this is likely the book Vernon "mistook" for EATCT when his father brought it home from work to show him as a young boy.

Also, with only about 15 known examples, and going for around 5K when the one every ten years shows up for sale, this seems a great opportunity for those interested in the contents.

Can we reserve a copy Geno?

It was written by Frederick R. Ritter of Columbus OH. He was in the vending machine industry, but had been a gambler in Hot Springs AR in the 1890s. He shot himself in 1922.

I am not trying to stir the pot too much, but Ritter is German for knight. Just saying ...

And "Kaufman" is German for merchant. I am not German. Nor is my last name a pseudonym.

If he had, I suppose it would have been R.E. Ttirrf.

Not true. It would have to be Kaufmann with two n at the end.

One of the interesting things to me was the discussion of non-standard hands -- "Big Cat", "Skip Flush", "Forty-Nine", "Little Dog", etc.

I am by no means a serious poker player, so maybe everyone else has heard of these.

People will make odd modifications to the rules. When I was in college and would play penny poker, one guy in our dorm always wanted to make Spades wild. It made for interesting hands. Another liked "Dr. Pepper Poker" -- 10s, 2s, and 4s wild.
