Masters of Illusion and Penn & Teller Fool Us Both Renewed!

Postby Richard Kaufman » November 18th, 2014, 3:03 am

From Deadline.com:

Dean Cain will host 13 new half-hour episodes of Masters Of Illusion, featuring escapes, sleights-of-hand, and large-scale illusions performed in front of a studio audience. The show is from Associated Television International with executive producers David McKenzie, Al Schwartz, Gay Blackstone, and David Martin, along with co-executive producers Justin Pierce and Jim Romanovich.

After acquiring the original British series from DCD Rights to air this past summer, network has ordered 13 brand new one-hour episodes of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, which will go back into production next year. As in the previous season, the one-hour competition series features aspiring magicians trying to fool illusionists Penn Jillette and Teller. Those who do get to perform with the magic duo at their show in the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The live studio audience and the TV audience watch along with Penn & Teller as they try to figure out the stunts, seeing each trick performed just once. The show is created and produced by 117 Productions and September Films (part of DCD Media) for ITV, with executive producers Peter Adam Golden and Andrew Golder.

Fool us is a great way to promote an act.

Now just to figure out an effect Teller doesnt know.

Are they still not speaking to you, Richard?

I really like that Fool Us will continue to be produced in England, since it lets me see a bunch of guys whose work I am not always familiar with.

It would be kind of cool if the show could make a guest stop in other European countries that are hotbeds of magic (e.g., Spain). Tamariz, Da Ortiz, et al would fool 'em bad, I reckon.

Fool Us is being produced BY ITV & various uk producers but isn't being made in the UK - Just like the same team make America's Got Talent / Britain's Got Talent but fly one or two key production people to TV studio's in different countries rather than flying hundreds of contestants to one studio.

Thanks for the correction, Tom.

So, how does that work exactly--do Penn and Teller just fly to different countries to watch various acts in front of an audience?

No

The first series of Fool Us was filmed in the uk with P&T and an almost entirely UK competitors
The footage from this series was re-edited to make the "first season" of the american version (different running order, few different links but essentially the same show)
The "new series" announced today is being filmed in the USA - a few key people from the UK production team are flying out to act as managers/supervisors to control the format but 99% of the staff working on the show will be americans, shooting in an american studios, with predominantly american contestants.

There are other versions of Fool Us (not featuring Penn & Teller) out there in production limbo and the format was always designed to be re-worked with a magic experts relevant to different countries rather than P&T being the experts in every version.

Ah well. Choices have consequences. An interview with the pair about the renewed show would have been cool.

I suppose being a pair of self righteous, small minded, petty, childish pricks is a choice.

time to come off the playground, boys. The silent treatment is for toddlers. I guess uri was wrong - we aren't all adults here in the magic world.

I guess they have made moral decisions and are sticking to them. Whether you agree that Uri is a despicable human being for taking money from people who believe he has supernatural powers or not, I think it's worthy of respect that someone sticks to their moral guns.

Personally, I walked out of Uri's talk at the Genii Bash after 5 minutes and he makes me feel a little sick seeing him on QVC selling healing crystals to schmucks, but I would defend someone's rights to think it is cool to tell people with missing family he can help find them for money or sell them "healing" jewellery.

Diff'rent strokes. And all that.

I think to so cavalierly discard a long personal and professional relationship over something this ridiculous is pretty sad.

Your calling the issue ridiculous shows little willingness to understand why some might find it a bit more important. If anyone is being cavalier it is the editors of Genii for dismissing the people who disagree with the decision to invite Geller to the Bash, as being ridiculous.

I have no knowledge of the prior relationship Richard had with P&T, but any fan of them knows how the duo feels about Geller and people of his ilk. It's practically part of their DNA. Therefore it should be no surprise that they would take this stance in the wake of that event and Genii's continued support and enthusiasm for said person.

Surely all the pages of material written in this forum about this topic, combined with the sudden silence of three living legends of magic, would cause you and Richard to at least consider the reason behind it as something more substantial than "ridiculous."

Randi is not a living legend, except in the mind of a handful of his acolytes.

The problem with the skeptical community is that they have failed and have failed for lack of understanding humanity. To shun Geller and silence him is to give him far greater power than letting him speak. The danger in that, of course, is he might say things which undermine the false narrative a handful have tried to create over decades. A skeptic would want all sides to have their say, and deal with this issues raised.

None of these three men want that. Because they did not get to control the information stream they are now acting like big babies.

when three big babies stop talking to you, should you reconsider your choices?

Widdle,

I am not going to litigate--again--the lack of wisdom shown by these men over this; we've been down that road twice. You are not going to convince me and I am not going to convince you. We are going to have to agree to disagree.

AH HA!!!!

That is what reasonable people do! Agree to disagree and move on. They do NOT toss away an entire relationship over something that is--in the long run of a short human life (and dare I say it again)--ultimately ridiculous.

Politics
Religion
Pornography
Prostitution
Recreational drug use
Alcohol
Homosexuality
Same-sex marriage
Pseudo science

All very important issues to people. All societal wedge issues. And all ridiculous reasons over which to abandon a relationship. I married (and remain so for 35 years in a couple of months) a woman whose opinions on several of the above subjects are opposite of mine. I do not love her any less for it.

Agree to disagree. Have the discussion. Hell, yell and scream about it! Then move on and relish the things in which you enjoy common ground.

Starting with humanity.

If you cannot do that, I cannot help you. Or Teller.

Dustin
