$545,000! I'm betting Teller won't see a penny of it, though. You can't get blood from a stone.

It's a moral but rather hollow victory - american courts don't have jusitiction over non-american citizens in other countries so yes; it'll never actually be enforced unless he visits the USA and even then i think we can safely say he probably doesn't have $1/2m to hand over.
As it was a judgement in default I'm also not sure whether this actually sets any legal precedents (which would be important) certainly on this side of the atlantic default judgements don't. It's made people ask some important questions and it's made it clear to anyone else that P&T do have deep pockets and unlimited time so ultimately it benefits them the most by dissuading people from copying their material.

Re: Woop! Teller won!
Congrats to Teller to stand up for his rights, sue, and prevail.
For me there are a couple of lessons here:
1) Register your work. Without registration no statutory damages and thus usually a much harder path to get compensation.
2) To get a $15k judgement for infringement damages you need to spend half a million or more on lawyers!
3) Getting a judgement is good, but now the question is can Teller collect that money. My guess is that this will be very hard to do. But I hope we will hear more about it if and when it happens.
4) I am surprised that Teller could sue for legal fees. My understanding was that this is generally not possible in copyright infringement cases. Any lawyers here to comment on this?
