Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (October 2014)

Postby Dustin Stinett » October 2nd, 2014, 12:52 am

Starting off with a Buyout …

Reminder: The Castle will be closed for a buyout on Thursday the second.

Conjuring the Modern Woman: Part 2

Last January Angela Sanchez conducted a Member Perk (based on her thesis) that “explores the social dynamics and historical context of magic during the second half of the twentieth century and its effect on the role and representation of women magicians.” Part Two of this Perk takes place in the Inner Circle on Tuesday October 7 at 8PM. All members are welcome.

Coincidentally …

That week—which begins on the 6th—just happens to be “Women in Magic Week.” The ladies who will be conjuring for your entertainment pleasure are Lupe Nielsen, Alba, Sisuepahn, Lisa Cousins, Joan DuKore, Becky Blaney, Malin Nilsson, Circe Martinez, Kayla Drescher, Kimberly Bornstein, Nancy Jean Gray, and Ali Shelley. Rachel Colombini will be lecturing for members on Sunday.

Popularly Demanded

Get your reservations in now for the always popular Non-Dining Houdini Séances with Rob Zabrecky. Four shows will be held on Tuesday October 14 at 6, 8, 9:45, and 11PM. Just $35 per person ($45 includes the new, “limited edition,” commemorative coin). Tickets are available through the events link at the AMA website OR contact the AMA Séance Manager Josh Stern at jstern[at]magiccastle[dot]com or at extension 303.

Because When I Think “Magic Castle,” I Think “Football”

Well, apparently many of you do, so remember that Monday Night Football is celebrated (cleverly) on Monday nights during the season. The Hat & Hare Pub is the venue and, for a lousy fin, a fiver, a finski—a five dollar bill—you can gobble down all the hot dogs, Castle chili, and soft drinks you care to.

One Word: Shimada

Shimada will be appearing in the Palace of Mystery for two nights ONLY: October 20 and 21. The only way to guarantee a seat is to have dinner reservations. Call today!

Given the Time of Year, I Hope it’s Not About Baseball…

On October 21, member Andrew Mayne will be holding a talk and Q&A on his new book, Angel Killer. 8PM in the Inner Circle.

Enter the Fourth Dimension …

This year’s Halloween celebration will be held between Friday, October 24 and Friday the 31st. During the week the Castle will be “invaded by ‘Horror-Vision 4D’—a 4-dimensional frightmare that haunts all your senses, bends your brain, and twists reality.”

Costumes are encouraged during the week and are mandatory on both Fridays and the one Saturday. The Members Only Halloween party is on Wednesday, October 29th. Costumes are mandatory.

Of course the Castle will be decorated to the hilt and there will be the usual Candy Coffin, a tarot reader, themed cocktails, menu items, and souvenirs. (I am looking forward to the 4D costumes …)

And the Kids Love Us

The Kid’s Halloween celebration for members and their families is on Sunday the 26th in the Inner Circle. Brunch reservations are not required. There will be mask-making, face-painting, games, balloon animals, a photo opp, “It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” and a costume contest for the kids. Festivities start at 11AM and last to 3PM.

October Member Menu

6, 7, 8 – Grilled Top Sirloin
13, 14, 15 – Shrimp Fettuccini Alfredo
20, 21, 22 – Chicken Dijonaisse and Risotto
27, 28, 29 – Cider-Brined Pork Chop

School’s in Session (Pretty Much Every Sunday)

The Members Only Lectures for October:

10/5 – Mike Caveney
10/12 – Rachel Colombini
10/19 – Shoot Ogawa
10/26 – Dave Cox

Ink Your Calendars

The coming holidays are always exceptionally busy for the Magic Castle (and if you think this summer was busy, well …), so plan ahead.

Please be sure to make reservations and, if you cannot make it, cancel them. The magic Castle would rather allow in someone else than charge your credit card for a no-show.

If you plan on walking in on a peak night, call ahead and make sure that the old place has not hit capacity.
