I've worked on a few "asian" tv shows and no-one has ever been able to explain to me their obsession with having in-vision talking heads, endless captions (which rarely say more than "wow" or "amazing") & voiceovers on magic and variety TV shows. I've never seen them contribute anything other than filling up the screen and if you watch real live performances in that part of the world they don't have people running on to the stage every 20 seconds shouting "wow" - can anyone shed some light as to why it's done?

There are precedents to this in Japanese culture, that became common long before television -- e.g., the format that was used during the showing of silent movies, which included live commentary.

The cultural reasons for this are complicated enough that I won't address them here.
