(Almost) Startin’ Off with a Day Off
Please remember that the Magic Castle will be closed on Friday July 4 to celebrate Independence Day (and yes, that includes lunch).
(Actually) Startin’ Off with AJ
For two nights only, June 30 and July 1, The Amazing Jonathan will be giving what is being heralded as his final performances in the Palace Theatre. Hope you have your dinner reservations already. (I listed him in the “sneak peek” last month, so no excuses!) Chris Heart is his opening act.
Schedule Note
The Castle will be closed for dinner reservations and walk-ups on Sunday July 6. The club will be open for brunch the first two seatings, but there will not be a lecture for Magician Members that afternoon.
It Be Time to Put Them Fay-Row Lessuns from Last Month to Work
With your new-found knowledge and skill you can buck the tiger on Sunday July 13, which is the annual Soapy Smith celebration. 8PM in the Inner Circle. $15 per member (it benefits the Dai Vernon Fund).
Another Schedule Note
Because of preparations for the Soapy Smith shenanigans, the will not be a lecture the afternoon of July 13. The AMA, Dai Vernon Fund, and the Soapy Smith Preservation Trust thank you.
Nnnoo … Not the Big Rabbit
The Amazing Harvey is a murder mystery penned by Don Passman. The central character is magician Harvey Kendall and The Castle makes several appearances in the book. You can enjoy a Q&A and book signing with Mr. Passman on Monday July 14 at 8PM in the Inner Circle. All members are welcome.
Nnnoo ... the Board Members are Not Wearing Fetching Lingerie
The Magic Castle is the subject of an eight page article in the July issue of Maxim magazine. (Apparently it hit the newsstands in the middle of June, so it may only be out there for a couple of more weeks if you are interested.)
Did You Know...
...that Mac King will be making an appearance in the Palace Theatre on July 20 and 21? Now you do. Need more information? So do I. So until I can get the whole skinny, I recommend calling for dinner reservations AND asking if there are separate tickets arrangements that need to be made. (The last time Mac did this it was a charity event.)
Be Adult … We Need More Dults (An oldie but a goodie … and no, we have plenty of dults)
Young Adults Nights are always popular and the next one is Monday July 28. Ages 13 and older are allowed in during normal hours. The regular dress code is in force. Get your reservations early. (Coincidentally this is the beginning of “Future Stars of Magic Week” and there are some terrific young talents lined up, including some grads from the Junior Program that you have probably heard of.)
Members Munchies Menu
July 1, 2 – Broiled Marinated Codfish in Miso, Sautéed Edamame, White Rice
July 7, 8, 9 – 7-Up Marinated Chicken, Soy, Horseradish, Garlic, Jasmine Rice
July 14, 15, 16 – Garlic Cheese Stuffed Burgers, Boursin Cheese, Steak Fries
July 21, 22, 23 – Mongolian Beef and Sticky Rice
July 28, 29, 30 – Blacked Tilapia, Lemon Caper Cream Sauce, Au Gratin Potatoes
Admittedly a Little Thin This Month
Admittedly the lineup of lectures for July is light, but that can be seen as a good thing. Take a breath and spend some time with the stuff you learned over the last six months of lectures!
Here are those who will be lecturing and, frankly, they more than make up for the two lost days:
July 20 – Gregory Wilson
July 27 – Allan Ackerman
(See? I wasn’t kidding around. Those two should more than satisfy your “magic jones” for July.)

Re: Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (July 2014)
Here is a glimpse of the eleventh annual Soapy Smith Night shenanigans. Proceeds from the auction went to the Dai Vernon Foundation. There was plenty of "gambling" and a costume contest, some trick shot pool by Chef Anton and music by David Bourne and company. A great night at the Castle.
That is Pop Haydn in the middle and Jeff Smith on the right.
