New Genii Website Up and New Digital July Edition Live

Postby Richard Kaufman » June 13th, 2014, 4:43 pm

Okay, folks, after five months of work: go to www.geniimagazine.com and sign in using your ASK ALEXANDER username and password.
Go to either the "Magazine Dashboard" or "Issues" and click on any one. In you'll go to our new system. If you have questions, click on the "Help" button on the bottom of the black toolbar on the right.
The digital edition of the July issue is live there!
Have fun.

YES, there are still a few bugs, but these will be sorted out over time.

No joy for me I'm afraid - I can sign on but but seems my current subscription is not being recognised.

The only option I get is an invitation to renew my subscription.

Seems to work pretty good for me. (although some of links on the Table of Contents page go to the wrong place).

Excellent news. Everything works for me aside from the following. 1) Navigation is sluggish and doesn't always recognize my clicks to go to next page and 2) I am unable to navigate to the back cover...I can see it in the page index (the one where you can see thumbnails of all pages), but I can't flip past the last advertisement for Tamariz's Magic Way. I'm using Google Chrome build 35.0.1916.114 m

They are still working on stuff, so that accounts for the sluggishness and, as I wrote in my first post, some bugs. This is the way it will work until Monday morning, when they come back and finish off the various bugs.

If YOU find bugs, please list them here in this thread in detail.

I'm able to log in but can't navigate the issues at all. The menu bar disappears and I just get the cover.

Iis the new system entirely browser based? Is there a native app that offers the ability to read offline?

No, the browser based system is for your desktop and laptop computers.

Apple was supposed to have put our app up yesterday, but for some reason it's not there yet. So, while you should be able to download to your iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, there seems to be a hitch somewhere.

Chris: can you check if our Android app is up? I don't have an Android device.

If you're seeing just the cover and no black toolbar, it sounds like you are in fullscreen mode. Is there a blue box at the upper right corner (with arrows inside that point outward)? Click on that and you will exit full screen view.

I really like this new site! Nice job!

Bug:

I clicked on the archive and search button but nothing happens. No window or a search area appears. Using Windows 7 and IE 11, current Flash player, etc.

PS: The BEST thing I just saw was Richard's performance of the Fiedler Gozinta boxes in the June 2014 "More Genii Speaks"! :D

I absolutely love in the Android app that I can click on an article and it loads as text, instead of an image, for easy reading. Well done! No more pinch to zoom, drag, drag, pinch again, etc. to read genii on my smartphone.

Erdnasephile, most folks no longer use IE. Dump it and try Firefox or Chrome. I stopped using IE years ago! All systems optimized for Firefox and Chrome. Let me know if that works.

Hooray! More Genii Speaks and other videos are now larger than a postage stamp. Major improvement.

Here are some areas which could use attention:

Covering hyperlinked text with gray boxes makes them really hard to read. In most interface designs, hyperlinked text usually jumps out as the most readable text on the page. Example: Genii Forum uses orange text to show links! The gray link boxes in the new magazine interface nearly block out the text beneath them. Also they are not well centered and so look sloppy.

Search interface needs some serious work to be of any use:
- Search results do not show any context, making them almost useless. Notice how Google (and CARC) results are comprised of 2-3 lines of text surrounding the search term for each hit, so the user has some chance to evaluate whether any given result is worth clicking through.
- After clicking a search result and viewing the page, I could not return to my page of search results, making me start all over.
- Upon clicking through to a result page, CARC highlights the search terms on the page. That's pretty useful.
- Start/end dates are a hassle to fill in each time. Fill in default values.

Tiny item: In the July issue's text version of the Table of Contents, Expert At The Kids' Table has no byline.

[I'm reading on Windows 7 with Firefox 30.0]

No blue box, no arrows, but that's cool. I'll wait for the iOS app.

I've now tried to login via the website (latest version of Firefox, windows 7) and on a google nexus 7 (2013) tablet, running stock android.

Total failure each time.

Logging on to the website, my "ask alexander" login info is accepted, but none of my information (subscription, address, etc.) comes through and I get this.

My Subscriptions

You have no active subscriptions. Order a subscription in the store
.

I then got on the tablet and downloaded the new app (tecnavia version).

It fired up, I then put in my ask alexander username/pw. and promptly go this error.

Token Authentication Error

The app then took me to a screen that looked like the web page, with the same exact "No active subscriptions" error.

So, for me, it's just absolutely busted right now. I can still log in to "ask alexander" (albeit only to view other materials)so I know the p/w information is good.

It very much looks like my username/pw was brought over, but all subscription data (including mailing address) seems to be either lost, hidden or inactivated.

So Denis, Chris and Alfred are experiencing the same as me.

I wondered if it was because my subscription renewal commenced either with the May or June issue - I can't recall which, but it was fairly recent.

That being said, my subscription never 'lapsed' and I'm still able to access Genii on Ask Alexander - I think the Illusionists is the latest issue I can see.

But I cannot change my password for the Genii Magazine account. I can get to the proper screen, but the password change does not work. I tried 3 browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox).

Login Fine

Android tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1) fine other than a little slow to render clearly.

Notebook with Chrome browser fine

Notebook with IE...problems loading an issue

Hope this helps

***BTW, I REALLY like being able to access all issues from one place. Thanks, Richard.

I was able to log in with Safari 7.0.4 with no problems. The main page displayed the last 7 issues with additional years available through the Search.

Looking forward to the iOS app next week. Excellent start!

I know you are going to have some headaches and hiccups as this stuff gets sorted out, but this is a very positive step forward and increases the value of a Genii subscription immensely.

Btw, my experience above on the Android tablet was using the Android app, just to be clear.

I've now tried 3 different browsers on the desktop (firefox, chrome, IE) I also tried Firefox and Chrome on my Android tablet.

All allow me to login, however it's useless because it's evident that my subscription status didn't make the trip from the old system. Still getting the following on every browser on both Android and Windows.

MY SUBSCRIPTIONS
You have no active subscriptions. Order a subscription in the store.

So, no current ability to view any issues at all (regardless of Browser or Operating system)

Since some can log in (heck even I can log in, albeit with no further access) and use the system, I'm assuming the issues are probably related to a corrupted or incomplete export of the user accounts from the old system to the new one.

Chris,
Are you signing in with your username or email address?
Try using your email address, that worked for me.

And if that does not work, you might want to see if the email address for AskAlexander is the same one registered with Genii.

And if not, then I would try using the "Lost my password" with the genii registered email to see if that works.

I'm guessing the email address for AskAlexander is different then the email address that Genii has on file.

You could try the "Lost my password" with other email addresses and see if you get back anything.

The p/w I have works, in terms of letting me log in (but not actually being able to access any issues) telling me that simply updating it will lead to the same result. And that information would still be with CARC, not the new system.

The guys at the magazine (tecnavia) need to look at their export process, find out why several people lost their credentials in the changeover process and figure it out. I have faith that they will, but hopefully it won't take too long.

I would assume they are now using genii to get your subscription information, which is tied to the email they have on file, not what may have been transferred over from CARC (and could have been updated after initial setup).

I would still suggest users try the lost password with an alternate email address they may have at genii, could not hurt.

And then log in with your alternate email address, NOT the username.

I don't think the problem is at Tecnavia's end, but that can't be sorted out until they reopen on Monday.

There will indeed be a Kindle Fire app.

I just found my Android tablet and downloaded the new app. It's the first time I've seen it. Yes, it is sluggish, but more importantly it hasn't been "fixed" the way the iPad app has. So there will be changes to that in the coming weeks.

Just did a test. If you are able to login and cannot see the issues try this.

Login with your email address, NOT username.
If error comes back that there is no user with that email, try another email address that it could be until you get an error that the password is wrong.
Now select Lost Password link to get your password.

If that still does not work, repeat with other email addresses you may have.

Hope this works for some.

Search now works.

However, when looking at the listing of the search results in the window, if I click on one of the search results, the page that was found in the search does not display.

Anyone else having trouble with search?
