Freak Out?

Postby Anthony Vinson » May 29th, 2014, 9:21 am

Anyone else out there in Genii-land who regularly listens to the Freakonomics podcast? It’s good stuff if you enjoy that sort of stuff. At any rate, the latest show features magician and author Alex Stone gleefully and unnecessarily exposing both the double lift and thumb tip. Yeah, no biggie as these things go I know, but the way he went about the exposure slightly ruffled my fur. For instance, he used a thumb tip to vanish a small silk – Gasp! He then immediately challenged the group for whom he just performed to figure out the method. He did the same with the double lift after performing an ambitious card routine.

But here’s the real rub, at least for me: He came across as a lousy, inept performer. His patter was stilted and cliché, his tone condescending; the overall impression was not good. At the same time, when asked by the host, he was quick to number himself among the best and most knowledgeable magicians.

No real point here, I guess, just a bit of minor grumbling…

I heard the episode and recognized his name from the book he wrote. I figured someone would post about if it mattered much. Here's a link to the episode and it's transcript.
