And Away They Go…
The Kentucky Derby is Saturday the 3rd and, of course, the Magic Castle will be the place to be if you can’t be at Churchill Downs. 1PM to 4PM in the Inner Circle. $15 gets you a buffet and there will be $5 mint julips, a hat contest (of course) and a bourbon tasting is also available (extra cost). Contact Ben Roman to RSVP by Friday the 2nd broman [at] magiccastle [dot] com.
Remembering The Prez
The week of May 5, all of the performers will be paying tribute to Bill “The Prez” Larsen, Jr.
Just Stay Home for a Change
Tuesday May 6 is a buyout at the Castle. No reservations, walk-ins or guest cards will be accepted. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding!
Thanks For Your Service
On May 7 there will be a “Tricks for the Troops” perk. A panel of entertainers who have volunteered to go into the “hot zones” to entertain those who are there on orders will talk about their experiences. There will also be a screening of (quote) “Guantanamo Circus, the award winning 1/2 hour documentary about a circus troupe that journeys down to the base of the ‘most notorious prison on the planet’ to infuse a ‘blast of positive energy.’” 8PM in the Inner Circle, all members welcome.
Sorry Mom
Mom (and/or your better half) will be stuck with you on Sunday, May 11 as there will be no lecture that afternoon: it’s Mother’s Day. Consider taking her to Sunday Brunch at the Castle (better call now and hope for a cancelation)!
Ready … Aim … Pick a Card!
The next Strolling Magic Showdown is on May 13. Perform, judge, or spectate; your choice of how you will participate. Registration starts at 7PM in the Inner Circle. For information, contact Scotto Smith at ssmith [at] magiccastle [dot] com.
From the Land of the Rising Sun
日本ウィークの魔法 = “Magic of Japan Week” (according to “Bing” anyway) and it will be held during the week of May 19. Scheduled to appear are Aki Mitsui, Misty Mew, Atsushi Nishida, Motti, Wakaba, HAMAchan, Toritto, Masataka Jimbo, KoKoRo, Kikuty Mammy, and YOURI. Make your reservations now to guarantee a spot for the Palace show.
Books … You Remember Them, Right?
The William W. Larsen Memorial Library (better known as the Castle Library) will be holding a book sale on May 28 at 8PM in the Inner Circle. Proceeds will benefit the Library Fund as well as the Vernon Foundation. Over 300 books will be for sale courtesy of Paul Smith (Charter Member Number 27!). There will be a silent auction for “premium” titles. (The Gift Shop will also have some stuff available at discounted prices—at LEAST 50% off!)

Re: Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (May 2014)
It’s a Start…an Op-Ed
Anyone who has actually paid attention to my posts here (and wherever) on the Magic Castle know that I have, for years, championed a third level of membership that would allow those who cannot go to the Castle more than a few times a year, but would still like to be a member of the Academy. (It has always been my stance that anyone serious about magic should be a member of the academy.)
Well, they have created a new level for people outside the USA and Canada called “Global Members.”
I think this fantastic with one problem: the restriction on regular electronic guest passes. I think this is a mistake. Here’s the conversation:
Magic Fan: “So you’re a member of the Magic Castle?”
Magic Boy [proudly]: “Yes, I am a member of the Academy of Magical Arts and our clubhouse is the internationally famous Magic Castle!”
MF: “Wonderful! I’ll be on holiday in Los Angeles this summer. Can I get a pass to get in?”
MB [Sheepishly]: “Well…um…no…I’m not THAT kind of member.”
***
I agree that the Global Member should NOT be able to give out VIP passes, but a regular pass—electronic only so there is no cost for printing to the organization—should be a benefit of membership at all levels. The guest must pay the door charge and have dinner anyway, so it’s a win-win situation for everyone. I can find no reason not to make that a benefit of this new level.
With that minor rant out of the way, I think that this is a fantastic development for the international magic community and I hope people will take advantage of it. Because I know that you are serious about magic and you want to be a member of The Academy of Magical Arts (and together we can work on getting that guest pass benefit for you).
Here are the fine details:
To become a Global Member, you must first:
• Complete a Global Application form
• Provide written statement providing intent of membership
• Provide performance materials: Promo package, DVD, online links, etc.
• Provide references with contact information
• Have one AMA sponsor
• Provide proof of residency
• Provide identification photo
Then, for only a $125 one-time initiation fee and $100 annually, you receive:
• Entrance to The Magic Castle up to three times per year
• Door charges and dinner requirement waived for member plus 1.
• In-person access to one lecture and one "Castle Perk" event each year
• Unlimited access to the Academy's world-famous Library
• Full online access to Academy website, and members-only forums and social-media sites
• Right to proclaim oneself as a proud member of the Academy
Benefits not offered:
• Voting privileges of any kind
• Guest cards (printed, online, or VIP passes)
• Online Genii Magazine or “Ask Alexander” subscription/access
