Re: Best Version of Lubor Fiedler's Gozinta Boxes EVER
Tom - would love to see it. Firm believer that there is great power in taking a weakness and reframing the piece to make it the strength!
Dustin - completely appreciate the need for variety in audience response. Having said that, I find that approach different from the expressions expressed here by fans of the effect. I do believe this piece appeals to magicians, perhaps because we are willing to watch closely and because we are better at conceptualizing what the msgician claims as well as remembering details in a sequence of events.
the dreibeck die routine has a charm to the story. I can see how audiences find that entertaining. I am not sure that laypeople appreciate the effect per se as intensely as magicians do. I know the first time I saw it I freaked. I can't say that I've seen non magicians react as strongly as I did
in my own experiments, I find that the effect is often lost on real people. it is a 'heady' effect - you see the inside on the outside, but have to infer the actual change. the new design may help A LOT. I believe that when people see the outside on the inside (and the difference is only color) that their brains just rewrite the experience as 'i must have misremembered'.
as a collector of puzzle boxes I know I have many items that are far less impossible but still get more amazement in reaction.
I think there is potential here, but aside from Tom's reference, I have yet to see it tapped.

Re: Best Version of Lubor Fiedler's Gozinta Boxes EVER
I wonder if you could start with a box, and say that inside it is a trash container. You open the box and take it out. Now what do you do with the box? You don't need it anymore, so you throw it away, by putting it in the trash container that came inside it.
This has some rough edges—what is a trash container doing with a lid?—so maybe it wouldn't be workable. I just love the idea of a trash container coming in a box which you then throw away in the trash container.

Agreed - the green triangle design seems useful - was tempted to ask for a pattern for the box(es).

Pete - I like that idea. The self consuming trash can. The cure for the environment.
kid show performer could switch boxes after demo of one with back cut out and a puppet installed within - a garbage monster.

Pete - I remember a Rita Rudner joke about that. Something about how she brought home a new wastebasket in a bag, then she immediately threw the bag away in the new wastebasket.

As a "Doctor Who" fan, it occurs to me that the outer box could be decorated as the TARDIS exterior, and the inner box as the TARDIS interior (complete with roundels and Time Rotor etc). The performer then demonstrates that the TARDIS is "dimensionally transcendental" (i.e. bigger on the inside than on the outside - for all you non-Who fans!)

Trademark? Design patents in USA? Permissions from the BBC? Gonna put a scarf in there too?
Not a bad idea if you've on the Doctor Who production team.

Obviously needed if you want to produce it commercially. Actually, Lubor Fiedler could approach the BBC to put it out as a toy for general sale if he so desired. I bet it would sell!
If you made it up on a one off basis purely to entertain friends and family on a non-commercial basis, it would be absolutely fine.

Let's hope the BBC don't find out eh Jonathan?

go ahead and put a cyberman inside a dalek... or the reverse and use the blue policebox as a finsh. Just seems odd to discuss stepping on other people's tv shows. Inspector Space-time?

I saw some giant Dalek cakes on the web one picture showed a pair one silver and the other gold - then recalled that the round Dalek decorations would contrast nicely with silver and tube design elements use in Cyberman costumes. The Driebeck Die design permits one more box - so there's your police box.

i see. The problem is that Daleks/Cybermen are not bigger on the inside than the outside,so this means that the presentation wouldn't work.
The long term premise of the series is that the inside of the Tardis exists in a different dimension than the outside, so it can be larger than the outside. Perfect for the Gozinta Boxes!

Ah, okay. Starting with a box decorated like a panorama of the interior of the TARDIS console room sounds great. I'm all for whatever works for the audience. Printing onto contact paper to decorate a set of boxes? Making your own? Maybe a blue light in the lid of one?
If you are up to doing the third (Driebeck type) box - maybe a different console room or... wait for it... the swimming pool?

That's easily explained by a distortion in the space/time continuum, caused by a reversal in the polarity of the neutron flow. This has affected the TARDIS Chameleon Circuit, resulting in a square police box! Simple!……...
…………..it's either that, or the Blinovitch Limitation Effect.

I used to worry I was the only one who had not read Goethe's Faust and Aristophanes play The Birds.
Doctor Who is very English of its time. Batman in black and white for a different sense of humor - now non-ironic retro.
Though that does suggest something about DVD box sets. Where the box for one series fits into another - Warehouse 13 and Eureka perhaps?

I don't think I've watched any medical shows since St. Elsewhere went off the air. Except for an episode of Chicago Hope that had Stephen Root on it.

It's a children's show.
It was very important to me growing up, everyone watched it back in the 70s 80s.
Now, it is a kids' show that's also watched by neck beard having D&D playing geeks.

At one time the shows "Father Knows Best" and "Marcus Welby MD" were on TV same day different times. Then there was M.A.S.H and the Trapper John show with different actors ... and never mind Klinger on The Gong Show...
But not to know about the show "Doctor Who" seems a little far out as it's being sold on DVD and broadcast outside England. Christmas evening for the last seven years?
So much for the continuity field around here.

Siege mode. Also - now there is a set of two boxes for just in case some resident aliens need to deal with a certain conflict of interest. Season 9 for Flatline and Season 10 for the invasion/inversion. Rubbertoe replicas is offering the cube shaped prop and miniature police box replicas.

If it ain't Tom Baker, it ain't Doctor Who.
Though full marks to Jon Pertwee for recognising the utility value of "...reverse the polarity of the neutron flow".
It fits very snugly into card routines, just before the revelation of the selected card.
It would probably suit the Gozinta Boxes, too.

Update: I decided to see what all of the Dr. Who hubbub was about, so I found this article:
http://entertainthis.usatoday.com/2014/ ... octor-who/
which gives Who neophytes like me a starting point as a portal to the series.
I can only speak for these four episodes, but I enjoyed them all--"Blink" especially.
I didn't realize it until the end, but "Blink" was written by Stephen Moffat, one of the brilliant creators of a truly terrific BBC show, Sherlock. (He also plays Mycroft, I believe)
Still, while these were a fun afternoon, I think my Who appetite is sated for now.
PS: For Sherlock fans (and those who should be), the new season starts January 1st, concurrent with the UK premiere.

Moffat is what I think is called "the driving force" behind both Sherlock and Doctor Who. I can't stand either of the two shows, but then that's just me.

In the 70s it was a must watch kids' show. It was on around 5pm and it was scary! Many a moment hiding behind the sofa when the Cybermen were about.
Then, somehow, it morphed into a show for adults. No idea really how...

It is Mark Gatiss who plays Mycroft in Sherlock, not show runner Stephen Moffat.
Gatiss regularly writes episodes for both Dr Who and Sherlock.
The January Sherlock I believe is one-off and set in Victorian times.
A new season is planned but not yet in production.

I loved season one of Sherlock, season two slightly less. Season three didn't do anything for me at all and I've lost interest in watching any more.
Good characters and stories have boundaries and limitations as to what is possible. Occasionally those boundaries get pushed. But when they get broken, all credibility is lost.
