Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (April 2014)

Postby Dustin Stinett » April 1st, 2014, 1:15 pm

April is a busy month at the Magic Castle, so there will be no April Fools’ jokes—as far as you know.

Bill Ma-lone! Bill Ma-lone! Bill Ma-lone! Bill Ma-lone!

Wednesday April 9 is Members Only Night with special guest Bill Malone. He will be in the Close-Up Gallery and you MUST have dinner reservations (and HAVE dinner) to get seats! So call NOW and you MIGHT get on a waiting list for cancellations (I’m wagering that this is booked to capacity alreay).

When? Where? Who?

7 PM Sunday April 13.
The Orpheum Theatre, Downtown Los Angeles.
You (and Host Mike Caveney, some award winners and Fellowship Recipients)!

Tickets are still available for the Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show:
http://www.magiccastle.com/awardsshow/

DAVID COPPERFIELD LECTURE!!! APRIL 13!!!***

Since he’ll be in town, the one and only David Copperfield will be speaking in the Palace of Mystery at 3 PM on Sunday, April 13. First Come, First Served (numbered tickets at the front desk). Line forms outside for tickets and the line for the Palace at 2 PM and NOT before!!! MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING ONLY!!! Membership cards WILL be checked!

Happy Campers

The performers during the week of April 14 will all be alumni of the Tannen’s Magic Camp, which leads us to …

Young Adult Nights

April 14 and 15 will be Young Adults’ Night, where youngsters age 13 and older are allowed into the Magic Castle during regular hours with an adult (who will likely be the one who needs supervision). The dress code is in effect. These are popular nights (that they now have TWO instead of one is evidence of that), so get your reservations NOW!

Be Vewy, Vewy Quiet …

The Easter Bunny will make his annual appearance at the Magic Castle on Sunday April 20. Have brunch, the kids can bring their baskets and gather some goodies and hunt for eggs, and get a photo with the Big Bunny. (Reservations are not required to meet the Easter Bunny and collect eggs—but where’s the fun in that?)

Did I Say Two Young Adult Nights?

Monday April 21 will also be a Young Adult Night at the Magic Castle!

Only a Month Late for His Birthday

On April 24, Rob Zebrecky will be hosting the Non-Dining Houdini Séances. Four shows: 6, 8, 9:45, and 11 PM. Only $35 per person (parties of two to 12). $40 gets the cool commemorative coin. Contact Josh Stern for availability and reservations at extension 303 (or email jstern [at] magiccastle [dot]com).

Bring Yer Foldin’ Money

The spring Magic Castle Swap Meet will be on Saturday, April 26. Doors open at 9 AM. Non-members are welcome for a small entry fee. And yes, youngsters are welcome too. This is a TERRIFIC opportunity for non-members to wonder around the Castle even if you don’t buy something (but how can you not take advantage of the deals)! See you there!

Science Schmience with Labman

Rudy Coby and his pals are taking over the Palace of Mystery the week of April 21 with his “Magic vs. Science” show. Making a dinner reservation is the only way to guarantee a seat! And keep in mind that Monday the 21st is a Young Adults Night! It’s a natural!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

The LA Dodgers have begun their [National League] march to October Glory (where they will lose in five to the Angels). On April 23, AMA members get go to Dodger Stadium and root on the Boys in Blue and eat all the Dodger Dogs they want for a measly $50. A block of 24 seats in the All You Can Eat Pavilion at the stadium have been procured for Castle members. Meet at the Castle and take the shuttle over to Chavez Ravine. The ticket includes parking at the Castle, a light buffet in the Inner Circle (starts at 5 PM), the ride over (6 PM departure), and the AYCE Pavilion seat (menu includes Dodger Dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn, soft drinks—beer and cocktails available for sale). Tickets go on sale on the Castle site (the events/tickets link) on April 2. Ben Roman is the man with the plan, so give him a ring at extension 434 with any questions. GO ANGELS!

“When Ya Got the Title, Ya Got Nothin’ to Prove”

That was a line spoken by John Scarne when asked if he would perform a few feats of sleight of hand with cards for a table of other magicians. Learn more about the man who some say wrote one of the greatest pieces of fiction when he released his autobiography! Bill Ragsdale, who has done quite a bit of research on Scarne, will host a Member’s Perk on the magician, game designer, casino consultant, TV personality, and “author” (ahem) in the Inner Circle on Tuesday, April 29 at 8 PM. All members welcome.

April Eats

April’s “Member Pin” menu specials from Chef Zupic are:

7, 8, 9 – Cheesy Buttery Broiled Shrimp, Tri-Color Couscous, and Quinoa
14, 15, 16 – Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta (Ziti Pasta with Bacon, Chicken, and Ham)
21, 22, 23 – Steak Diane (Filet Mignon, Wild Rice, with Brandy)
28, 29, 30 – Beef Brisket Bowl, Mashed Potatoes, and Baked Beans

***

Yeah, it turns out that I’m completely full of it (twice as full, actually). David Copperfield WILL NOT BE SPEAKING at the Magic Castle on April 13 (or anytime that I am aware of). This is my rather transparent April Fools’ Joke. There actually is NO LECTURE on Sunday April 13 because of the Awards Show, where you should be anyway.

There is also no lecture scheduled on Sunday, April 20 given the Easter Festivities going on. A GREAT day for brunch with the family!

The two April Lectures are:

4/6 – Murray Hatfield
4/27 – Harry Allen

Crystal Gazing …

My crystal ball tells me that the Magic Castle will be closed for a buyout on July 6, so make your schedules accordingly (and tell your guests).

Crunch Time…

The AMA Awards Show starring Mike Caveney is this Sunday, April 13 at the beautiful Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. There are still some tickets available. I have been remiss in noting that you do NOT have to be an AMA Member to attend! Contact Ben Roman at broman [at] magiccastle [dot] com for details and availability. See you there!

This Wednesday’s Members Only Night with Bill Malone is a big fat sellout, but call to check for cancellations (and if you have reservations and cannot go, PLEASE CALL AND CANCEL!). As my Daddy always said, “They can’t say ‘yes’ if you don’t ask.”

As an apology to David, I want to do something special for him here. It’s probably too long to put into the article I am writing for Genii (at least in its entirety), but David was very moved by what was written on his award. He told me that it captured everything that he has strived to accomplish his entire professional life. So here is that text, beautifully written by Max Maven, which appears on David’s plaque:

Academy of Magic Arts, Inc. Presents a Performing Fellowship to David Kaye in recognition of a career in which he has used magic to entertain children and, more amazingly, to understand them.

In the guise of “Silly Billy” he has enthralled countless kids. While his character is indeed silly, behind the scenes he has devoted himself to the serious study of how a performer interfaces with young minds.

A significant percentage of magicians have children as their primary audiences. The Academy feels it’s time to recognize a standout exponent in that field.

”We Are the C-I-Ts So Pitty Us…” *

Hey there campers, remember that this is “Magic Camp Week” at the Magic Castle. All of the performers are associated with Tannen’s Magic Camp. In celebration of that, there will be a screening of a film cleverly titled “Magic Camp” that is, cleverly, about Magic Camp. (I have seen some of it and I think it will be wonderful.) Wednesday the 16th at 8 PM in the Inner Circle. All members are welcome.

Eggs, Big-o-Bunnies, and Brunch

This Sunday is Easter, so don’t forget to bring the kids so they can meet the Easter Bunny, hunt for eggs, and eat candy. Brunch is not required to attend, but if there are any reservations left, why not partake?

Be Adult; We Need More Dults

Tonight (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday for those unfamiliar with your basic calendar) are both “Young Adult Night” at the Castle. If you cannot get a last minute reservation, fear not: there is a third on April 21. Get reservations now! These are popular nights!

Now Playing…

Thank you Dustin for posting the David Kaye (aka Silly Billy) information. As a kid's show performer, it made me feel very good to see our art recognized by the AMA. Max Maven's text on the plaque is superb. Thanks again.

Don't forget that this Saturday, April 26 is the Magic Castle Swap Meet. Doors open at 9AM. Non-members are welcome (only $8 to get in). Kids are welcome as well.

Mark Mason's latest newsletter says that he will be there, and I know that Mike Caveney will have a booth as well along with all the other sellers.

See you there!

Do the normal dress code rules apply for the event at 9am? I brought a coat/tie just in case, but I'd like to avoid wearing them if possible.
