Where the streets have magicians' names

Postby Magic Newswire » January 18th, 2014, 11:56 am

Steve Beam of the Raleigh NC Housing Authority is also a magician. As a part of the makeover of the Walnut Terrace public housing project, all of the streets have been renamed. Scarne St, Hofzinser Ct & Stebbins Circle for example.

Interesting article--

What I find baffling are the attacks Steve Beam is getting about this.

For example:

"(Community Activist) Rainey – who says her great-grandmother lived in the Walnut Terrace area – doesn’t think a historically black neighborhood should bear the names of people who were known for making things disappear.

“A lot of black people disappeared because they were fighting for their rights,” she said.

Huh?

In my home town, Smiths Falls, Ontario, one of the streets is Elmsley Street. My aunt lived on it.

It's got four houses on it. The third one faces the back yard.

I really liked the Roth interview--just fun to hear about some of the great years at the Castle.

One question: I tried to listen to some of the archived interviews, but several were off line--do you think it might be possible to please fix them at your convenience? I'd love to listen to the ones I missed please--they sound great! Thanks!

Of course we can't forget a street intentionally named for a real magician: Blackstone Avenue in Colon, MI. In 1991, as usual, I was arriving at the High School well before the house opened to get ready to photograph the show as the Lion's Club was setting up before the Weds night opening of the Get Together. In addition to the usual annual pin and candy, they had four recently replaced original Blackstone Avenue street signs to sell as fundraisers. I bought 2 (one for myself, and one for my good magic friend John Colwell). After the money had exchanged hands I told them they could get a lot more for the last two. In hindsight I wish I had bought all 4! The following year I returned to Colon with my sign in tow, and Harry Jr. graciously inscribed it to me. It is now one of my most prized magic artifacts. I tried to attach a photo of the sign but got this: Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached. Anybody know why?

David:

The GeniiForum doesn't host images.

You can try this service to host your image http://tinypic.com/
and use the Img command in your post.

It is a long story, but this is the main reason that I have been offline for so long. Trying to recover all of the older interviews has required an almost herculean effort.

I've been working my way through the archive and trying to restore as many as possible after the previous hosting service closed everyone's account without notice. It takes more time and effort than you can imagine to recover the file, upload it, find every reference and link on the site to the interview and then to bring everything up to date..

If there is a specific interview that you are interested in which isn't working, please email me and I will make it a priority to get it online as quickly as possible.

There are a few that I am in the process of trying to recover and upload to the new servers, but most should be available.

This is also one of the reasons that I am so excited about my new alliance to the Conjuring Arts Research Center. In addition to hosting all of our audio podcasts, Bill has plans to have them all transcribed so that they are referenced and searchable via Ask Alexander. WOW!

I can't believe that this pet project has garnered so much interest. Thank you all for making it a part of your routine to listen to these conversations.

Feel free to email me at dodd@doddvickers.com and I'll do my best to locate any missing files and to get them online asap!

Dodd good to be hearing your voice again. I agree about the David Roth interview. I liked his shout out to Malaysian hospitality. One thing that any visiting magician can expect here is being taken out for great food. We wish there were more of you visiting the country. His lecture with Michael Rubinstein last month was very good.

Here's a recent development, they are denying Steve comp time to go to magic conventions and considering renaming the streets...

The phrase "card trick magician" is used as a dirty word.

Right you are, Richard. One wonders if another hobby wouldn't have drawn so much ire. Sounds like he has done a fantastic job for the housing department aside from this silliness.

Looks like Steve had to negotiate with Whistler's mother:

Looks more like Norman Bates' mother. And about as lively.
