The August Issue of the Digital Genii is Now Live
Genii's August issue is now live in its digital incarnation for computer users. Tablet and Smartphone users should be able to access it tomorrow.
Our cover story on British magician and film actor Ali Cook is by famed writer Brian Sibley. The digital issue contains over 8 video clips from his various magic TV series.
Dustin Stinett braved rebirth and a whack on the behind from Amazing Johnathan to bring you his epic coverage of "Beyond Brookledge" event organized by Bob Self and Erika Larsen.
Dale Salwak has been traveling to North Korea on his own magical exchange program.
Columns by Robertio Giobbi, David Britland, David Kaye, Sara Crasson, and Jim Steinmeyer (a great new dodge for equivoque) and our reviews round out the issue along with color video of Blackstone, Sr. performing in the 1950s, audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer, and Matthew Field's video interview with Roberto Giobbi.
Another great issue from the largest and oldest independent magazine in magic. If for some odd reason you don't subscribe to Genii, please consider doing so at www.geniimagazine.com

Mine was in Monday's mail—before you went live! Don't you have a new service? Who ever it is, they're doing quite a job!

The new mailing service is only for foreign customers. US mail is still doing the job here.
We were two days late going live with the digital this month because of my trip to Japan.

I received the paper issue on 7/16, then downloaded the issue on my iPad. I still do not see it on my Android tablet (Asus Memo Pad). Is the Android version available? Not really important to me personally since I have it on my other device, but just wondering.

Yes, the Android version should be available the same time as the iPad and smartphone versions. You may need to refesh the app screen in order to add new items.

I had to delete the app and reinstall it for it to have the current issue of Genii.

The company suggests doing exactly what Bill did--delete the app and reinstall it.

Will the company ever suggest a less cumbersome process?

Wish I knew. Do you have to do this every month, or was this the first time?

There's got to be a way they could program in a forced refresh or something. A reinstall every month wasn't necessary before, wonder why this is happening now.

Re: The August Issue of the Digital Genii is Now Live
You've been discussing the Android app. I continue to have trouble with the iPad app. it might work for a time, then goes into a mode in which it crashes (the Genii logo against a yellow background appears for about 20 seconds, then the thing crashes completely). This might happen for 10-15 times in a row before it starts working again. It also either freezes or crashes if I try to use some of the features, such as the thumbnails. I love getting Genii on my iPad, but I've loathed this app from the start. Lots of bad words get said.
Is re-installing the app the advice for the iPad also? Am I the only one having these issues?

Hi, Steve -
I'm not having that issue with the iPad app - the only issue I have is that the multimedia will repeat. Not a big deal, though.
Thanks -
Mark

Steve, I've had no trouble with the iPad app for years and use it every month myself. Have also not had complaints along the lines of what you're saying.
I would try deleting the app and reinstalling it.
When downloading issues, make sure the app isn't disturbed (don't do anything else with the iPad) and make sure the iPad doesn't go to sleep.

Re: The August Issue of the Digital Genii is Now Live
Just for information, I have never had a problem with the iPad app.
I recently purchased the Android tablet and the August issue is the first new issue since I originally downloaded the Genii app. I had to do what the other Bill did, which is to uninstall and reinstall the app in order to get the Aug issue.
Incidentally, Sam's Club is selling a 32GB 7" Asus MeMO Pad for under $100. It has a few shortcomings, such as only one camera and a VGA (640x480) screen, and no Bluetooth, but the price is right! It fits inside a coat pocket.
It is nice not having to deal with iTunes to load music, and most importantly, the Genii app seems to work very well except for the download issue.

Re: The August Issue of the Digital Genii is Now Live
Received the paper version today (7/20/13) here in SW Virginia. It might actually have arrived on Friday, but I didn't get a chance to check the mail until this morning.
Re the discussion of issues with the iPad app: I was doing some basic maintenance on my iPad (a first generation model...no camera or iOS6....hence I still have Google Maps and not the highly flawed Apple Maps) and I discovered that the iPad Genii app was taking up well over 2 GB of space. The app itself is only a few megabytes in size and I've only used the app to read the issues online. I haven't ever downloaded an issue.
I deleted the app, then reinstalled, and it now takes up the expected amount of space. Anyone know why it's such a hog even when nothing is actually downloaded? Does it just maintain an unflushable cache of data?

Re: The August Issue of the Digital Genii is Now Live
And an update....just checked the size of the app and it's now at 145 MB, up from the minimal size it was after deleting and reinstalling (less than 10 MB, as I recall). I had just read the latest issue online a couple of days ago, so it's obviously downloading and retaining a chunk of data even with just an online read.
Anyone else notice this? Especially anyone who is using a later model of the iPad?
