Looks like this is all that's out there: https://twitter.com/search?q=blackpoolmagic&src=typd

I have never understood why conventions don't set up live blogs or feeds to help create a buzz...

Fantastica, hardly likely either Blackpool Magicians Club or the Manchester Circle of Magicians will kick him out as he is the President and Secretary of the clubs respectively.

The first two blogs Tim cites have virtually nothing on them.

The third one, though, is quite funny, both for the humorous comments the blogger makes, and the unintentially funny observations. He yet again makes the mistake of stating that the YouTube "Downfall" videos portray Lever as Hitler (they do not). He also says Carl DeRome was there, and sneaks in quite frequently in disguise.

And if the photo of the big fat naked ass is real, it embodies everthing that's wrong with the town. And his photos of his B&B are worth a visit to the blog.

Sadly everyone is too much of a coward to even say they are displeased with his [censored] for fear of being banned.

I'm rejoining the magic circle solely to propose he gets ejected from there.

I'm always amused that he always sticks the (rather over-inflated) price on the front of his 'books'. D**k.

I do not foresee anyone kicking Derek out of anything. Most magicians exhibit what I term "addict mentality". They seem to always be in need of their next magic fix. As long as he provides a convention as a fix and the dealers are happy, there is no perceived need for a change.

Kick the trouble makers out and most go blissfully along with the current form of fix. The fact that things could be much better is unimportant as long as a fix is provided.

Derek could be nipped if magicians and dealers were to take a stand and avoid his conventions. It will not happen as the addicts need their fix and dealers think they need the sales.

Right or wrong, fair or unfair, equal access or not do not enter in to the equation. All that matters is the fix and profits.

You can not even get magic fans to avoid rip-off dealers. How could any of us expect changes in the way Derek and his supporters operate?

I see no changes on the horizon.

Well I will be continuing the fight on behalf of the deaf magi next year. If we can get the 20 or so that used to attend to drum up more support we shall see.

So despite the claims that a sign translator would be against H&S, they had a language translator on stage in the exact same spot a sign translator would be in.

Nobody will rock the boat because, as was stated, they all like the magic "fix" Mr Lever provides.

If he wasn't running Blackpool, one of them might have to do it.

Easier to overlook a few "shortcomings" if someone else is going to do all the work and provide an event for you.

----------------

I'm not comparing this situation to Blackpool at all, but I remember many years ago a known paedophile was involved in a magic club but nobody would speak out against him because he was a big club supporter and his involvement in the club meant they didn't need to do anything other than show up.

Similar deal - magicians could boycott the cheap Chinese suppliers of rip-off magic, but then they might have to pay full price for magic...

Morals and ethics are rare commodities these days - replaced by self-centredness and short-sightedness

Me too, pity I cancelled going this year at last moment due to family problem, I certainly would have raise hell if I saw translators on stage, and brought the Signer on as well and see what happend,
the deaf magicians there said they paid full fee but did not have equal access due to not understand the lecturers.

fight goes on. we will see this year if a solution maybe found

It's not brilliant, just the common sense thing to do. However since you're British, I think you mean "brilliant" in the sense of a good idea.

If Obie blows his #$%$%^&* whistle in Derek Lever's ears, Lever may have a more personal understanding of what the deaf experience.

I have been busy with my interpreting, so I haven't seen this thread in a while. If we, as interpreters, are not allowed to do our jobs properly, then the ones who suffer are the ones needing our services! One convention tried to put me way off to the side of one stage where lecturers would be. I politely explained "line-of-sight" to that person. That explanation was enough for me to get a better spot for the lecture. Kudos to the interpreters for turning down the job for it being "unprofessional". A lot of people don't realize that interpreting is more than just "miming" or knowing sign language. A lot of training goes into obtaining and maintaining certification.

very true Margarette, it takes years of expensive training to be an interpreter for the deaf, so we must treat them as professionals as they do a wonderful job, but face many stupid objections and comments

So, Obie O'Brien returned my email and stated that he is indeed taking over the running of certain parts of The Blackpool Convention. Aside from talking about bringing a lot of acts from FFFF over there, he offered no further details.

I really still don't have a clear picture of what's happening.

I didn't buy any magic, I don't regret that!

The only thing I partially regret was spending 25 on a ticket into the convention and then not attending lectures and getting my money's worth out of it.
I essentially paid 25 for access to a building for the day and Beat The Wand.

This person posted on another forum hit the nail on the head, Deaf Magicians paid 90 and just got what he had for years, now you know what its like we cant get our monies worth as well.
