Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
I think I've got it. Just to remain cryptic, I would say that this person went under another name whose namesake starred in a number of Warner Bros movies. He had a close confidant who was something of a 'violinist'.
Hopefully that should make sense to Richard without giving too much away.

Phil Wilmarth is working on the book of Irv Weiner's material.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Dingle is a good guess. Is there a significant amount of unpublished Dingle material?
But maybe we're approaching this the wrong way. It's not a book. The key question to my mind is, what is it?
Richard calls it "a project of material". I take this to mean that it will teach tricks.
It's hard to believe that there is an unpublished and unknown instructional-style series of videos of anybody that meets the other criteria. Could it be a lecture?
And if not a book or video, what?
I'll bet if you reread every Genii Speaks column since Richard bought the magazine you'd find some clues.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Actually, I was wondering: if Richard didn't write it (since it's not a book) what part did he play in its creation? Or did he acquire it finished?
It's a big project. What world-class late-20th-century magician died early with a lot of unpublished material that had been videotaped but not released and no one knew about it?

Not Bob Read. I helped his widow and International Magic create the four DVD set that contains all of his work. His legacy has been captured.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Sadly, though, without Bob's Cups and Balls routine. It's unbelievable that there is no (available) footage of it. Richard tried to find some as did Louis Falanga for his smaller Bob Read project. Any word on his Cups and Balls book that is still to be publsihed?

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
True: we could not find any video footage of Bob performing "Penultimate Cups and Balls." He actually performed Dai Vernon's routine most of the time.
The book on his collection of Cups and Balls lithos is in production by Volker Huber. No date of publication has been announced.

Can't be Gary. The party in question left us "prematurely", and Gary is plenty old.

Good guess Edward, Geoff might be it. Although, Skinner's name hasn't been nixed.

I thought of JC as well, but was he as well known nationally as he was on the West Coast?

We never saw a "no" for the Doug Henning guess. Fits the criteria. Caused me to go to YouTube and revisit lots of Doug Henning clips there -- my face hurts from smiling!

Going back to the original post:
"He published some during his lifetime, but nearly enough."
I can think of quite a few magicans who published nearly enough.
And several who published more than enough.

"material by one of the most famous close-up magicians in the last quarter of the 20th century."
I think the part about most famous close-up magician would rule out Henning.

The project is something new in our field, a bundling of various types of communication which bring the real personality and special qualities of the subject to the forefront.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
I meant videotaped generically, that it was recorded as a video as opposed to audio/photo/etc. But now it seems like something more than just a book with embedded videos. Could it be some kind of app with programming that does... still not sure.
What I am sure of: Richard's business model is foolproof.
1) Announce secret project
2) Keep the pot stirred on the forum
3) ????????
4) Profit!
