Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
There's no point in putting out a project if you can't make it sell. Since I don't put out crap, I am happy to use any method at my disposal to create interest and get the word out.

Something that sophisticated would prevent anyone who doesn't have a fancy device from accessing the material.

So nothing web-based? Or did I read that wrong?

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
It could be web-based (since nearly everyone has access to the internet). But maybe not linked to any specific device, such as an iPad.
That is how I read that.
Another guess...
Scotty York.

Fred Kaps. Good one, Martin. The best guess I have heard so far.

No--not web based. Too ephemeral. Might vanish one day. You'll be able to hold it in your hands, but access it in modern ways.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Fred Kaps is a great guess.
A while back I copied four VHS tapes of various Fred Kaps things for Pete Biro, who was donating them to the Castle Library. TV Appearances in multiple languages. There were some homemade trick performance/explanation videos; I don't know if they were released commercially. My favorite is a wonderful home movie of Fred performing for Brother John Hamman. I don't know if there's more, but there's definitely some.
Is the product going to be released on a USB drive? They have those credit-card sized flash drives like that French thing recently.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
I suspect that if it were Kaps, RK wouldn't have referred to him as a famous "close-up magician", since Kaps was one of the greatest general practitioners ever. (I would be happy to be wrong, however).
PS: I thought Mike Caveney was going to do a book on Kaps, right?

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Not a USB drive: much too limiting for some people.
Dick Kornwinder was supposed to prepare a Kaps book for Mike Caveney. It hasn't happened and it's been at least a decade, perhaps more.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Have you secretly killed Ricky Jay, with intent to publish his oeuvre?
Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
I'll throw a "wishful thinking" guess out there.
I'll go with Pepe Carrol.
FISM 1st and 2nd place winner. Only published 2 small books. Died of a heart attack before age 50.
Internationally he was very popular; I just don't know how popular he was in the US....don't even know if that matters

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Here is a summary of the (non-joking) guesses so far and why some may not seem to fit the criteria:
Specifically denied by RK:
Bruce Cervon
Tony Giorgio
Geoff Latta
Bob Read
Tony Slydini
Irv Weiner
Someone already doing a book/project on them:
Tim Connover
Fred Kaps
Geoff Latta
Bob Stencel
Not primarily known as a close-up magician:
Doug Henning
Fred Kaps
Maybe not famous enough:
Jack Birnman
Jose Carrol
Gene Maze
Gary Ouellet
Steve Pressley
Marc Sicher
Looy Simonoff
Did not die really young:
Jimmy Grippo
Charlie Miller
Did not die:
Gary Plants
Terry LaGerould
Here's who is left from this thread:
Derek Dingle
Michael Skinner
JC Wagner
Scotty York
I suspect Skinner or Dingle (in the conservatory with the lead pipe).

Love the summary.
Can Dingle really be considered under-published, considering that RK wrote his "Complete Works"?

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Not David Alexander. That would be a book, and a large one, but I don't think he left enough written to make it happen. This is why I included his watch steal routine from Magicana in the 75th anniversary issue--as a remembrance.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Dingle's complete works was published 1982 and he died in 2004, so there might well be a lot of unpublished material.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
There is very little unpublished material of Dingle's--a handful of items which Stan Willis will be releasing as a series very shortly.

Jose Carroll (Pepe) was who I was alluding to when I wrote this:-
"I would say that this person went under another name whose namesake starred in a number of Warner Bros movies. He had a close confidant who was something of a 'violinist'."

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Could it be Eddie Fechter? He was only 63 when he passed. His influence in close-up magic certainly extended well beyond his amount of published material. (I'm not sure if he had enough unpublished stuff to fit the description of a "BIG" project).
Ditto, Mike Rogers.

Based on conversations I had with him, I believe David wrote down quite a bit of his material, but it was given only to his students and other professionals with whom he would trade material. He was very reticent about sharing his work with the general magic population. I suspect that his widow would honor that.

He did plan to write a book eventually, after the book on Silouhettes and the book on Frakson.

A large book on the magic of Pepe Carroll was published, in Spanish, a few years back. It contains the text from both his "52 lovers" books, interviews and theoretical essays, other material he published on magazines and some unpublished effects, including the routine with which Carroll won first prize at FISM 1988

Between the Books of Wonder by Tommy and Stephen Minch, and the L&L DVDs, which I believe Max Maven directed, Tommy is amply covered.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
First of all, sorry for my english! Two men was not mentioned. The first published a small sample of material which is classic now. Her notes was given to someone who never published it. It's Henry Christ.
The second published a first book "versatile card magic". His second book burst before publication. Perhaps like the phoenix the new Frank simon handwritten will reborn...

Not Henry Christ; Persi Diaconis has those notebooks.
Frank Simon's second book got lost when his apartment was burglarized after he had his stroke.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
I'm a subscriber and I've downloaded the digital issue, but I still don't know. Is the announcement on page 3? Because that page didn't download somehow.
Also, shouldn't I be able to see the current issue on Ask Alexander? The most recent issue there is May 2012. (And February and April 2012 are missing.)

No, the announcement is in the Genii Speaks video.
The issues in the regular Ask Alexander databank lag behind, however you can see ALL the recent issues going back to the January 2010 issue in the archive folder on the digital page. (You might read the instructions.)
