but we have plenty of registrations to the convention still available.

I considered sleeping on the street to use the money to buy my lecture notes, etc. etc., but found a place about half a mile away for roughly $40-48 a night via expedia.

Edward, you would do better to stay at the Red Roof Inn or the Econo Lodge near the Florida Mall. Much closer.

What is closest to the convention hotel? Prefer walking so as not to add car expense.

Thanks for the heads-up Richard. I re-booked for the Red Roof Inn Option--comes with free breakfast, wi-fi, and morning exercise. So I'm a happy camper with more money to spend for more important stuff--like lecture notes. :)
