It was a mockery. Couldn't a more suitable act have been found? I was embarrassed to be English

I've seen him perform for adult audiences before with mediocre results. One time at an Irish Convention (which I wasn't producing) he over ran on the Gala by 20 minutes much to the annoyance of Dania who was costumed up and standing around waiting to follow him.

Do you honestly think that it was fair to pay 500 to watch that crap? This was my first fism and I was totally ashamed. The show was a horror scene from a butlins holiday camp. Mind you, horses for courses and all that. Derek lever should hang his head in shame and offer an apology. What a tosser.

How I am feeling about choosing NOT to attend this event (would have been my first FISM):

FISM 2012 would only have been 3 hour drive away for me - however the venue was Blackpool which made it a big no-no for me.
Might think about going to Rimini though...

From the FISM page - www.facebook.com/fismpage :
Please remember that FISM Blackpool was produced solely by the local organising society headed by Mr Derek Lever. The FISM Presidium and Executive Committee had no control whatsoever over any production aspects outside of the contest. Please address any comments you may have in this respect to d.lever1@sky.com

A post that read something like ...

"Please remember it was The FISM Presidium that voted for Blackpool led by Derek Lever to host the WCM"

... just disappeared from this thread. How odd.

I thought it was quite a whitty retort.

I don't understand why it was totally under "local:" control. This is what used to be done with the IBM and SAM national conventions. They found the lack of consistency in the abilities of local clubs to handle the needs of such a major convention varied greatly. This is why both groups went to a National committee.
Having said that Blackpool has good reputation for putting on a good convention. I don't know what happened in this case. I wasn't there so I can only judge by the comments made on these forums.
FISM, itself, must bear some responsibility for the convention as it selected the site and gave control locally. It sounds like they are trying to pass the buck in this csse. Hopefully, they will learn from this and exercise more control in the future.

Just to clarify - the Fism presidium did not choose Blackpool. The presidents of the member societies did.

Sometimes you get what you deserve. The blackpool bid should have been rejected from the start.

Eric eswin and co no doubt had a thankless task in having to deal with the organizer over the last period. Remember the standard of the finalists and contestants overall is definitely improving ... A direct result Of the Regional contests introduced by Eric.

The elements coordinated by Derek Lever - however - were a whole other story.

I would like to second Craig's suggestion that Korea petition to host FISM 2018.

Italy is where my heart lies for 2015 for many reasons but the idea of visiting Busan for 2018, for me, puts FISM back on track as an International event.

The losers rarely return to the table right away but I urge Korea to break that trend. I am certain they will enjoy the support of many attendees and delegates.

Hi all,
Just wondered anybody knew who the magician was who was thrown out of FISM for selling his DVD called F**ki*g Coins.
I didn't go myself but two of my friends who went from our circle said that they threw him out, but it was for sale on other dealers stalls

I have no evidence to back this up, but no-one I know saw anyone get removed from the Wintergardens, and the story spread so quickly via Twitter and Facebook etc, that I wouldn't be surprised if it never actually happened and was just a publicity stunt.

It did happen. He was flypitching and leaving his publicity on other dealers' stands when they weren't there.

No convention allows flypitching.

Craig, I have read with interest your reviews and comments about your FISM experience and having been there for the week myself I can only echo what you say,and with the two distinctive NO VOTES against Blackpool hosting the European FISM championships and the role of Vice President speak volumes, hooray for democratic voting systems.

I think, in summing up the six-day Blackpool FISM, that everyone's worst fears when FISM was awarded to Blackpool back in 2009 were confirmed and then some.

Delighted for Yann Frisch that he won the Grand Prix on Bastille Day. Before his act on the Saturday afternoon show the entire French contingent stood and sang 'La Marseillaise', the French national anthem.

I'm eagerly waiting for Derek Lever to announce his resignation as president of The Blackpool Magician's Club after producing the worst FISM in history. Resigning is the only honorable thing to do.

Hi Brendan,

Didn't know that Eric had his close-up board stolen but call it whatever you like it was still theft. It is a tool in his professional role as a magician.

No theft in magic should be tolerated, condoned or considered anything other than theft.

Eric has sorted out all the monies that were due to magicians here in Ireland so hopefully he will have positive "Karma" and that it will be returned undamaged to him.

Cheers from the Emerald Isle.

I never thought i'd hear myself defending Derek in this way but i don't see why he should.

#1 the role of "president" of the BMC is in no way related to the convention organizing aspect of the organization; it's coincidence that this year the convention organizer is also the president. They are a functioning magic club the rest of the year so there's plenty of presidential duties that he has to fulfill that aren't related to conventions. The president is normally elected for one year so I'd expect him to see out the last 6 months of his term as planned.

#2 from any business/production point of view he's not done anything at all to apologize or resign for. His job as convention organiser is to put on an event and convince enough people to pay enough money to come to it, unless refund demands outstrip the operating profit then it's been a successful business venture. Since FISM had a ticket price 4-5 times that of "Blackpool" yet the product delivered could only have cost (at most) double what the normal convention cost i'd hazard that financially it's been very successful and has made BMC lots of money. Making people lots of money isn't grounds for resignation.

#3 It's not going to damage the "Blackpool" brand significantly. the Blackpool convention has ALWAYS been a cheep, no-frills convention with a boss who's a bit odd. People who pay 90 for a "Blackpool" ticket aren't going to be expecting the FISM standard and aren't going to be surprised or upset if the whole convention is a bit haphazard and the quality of acts varied. Even if the negative press effects the main convention they have the cash (from FISM Blackpool) to book a couple of mega-names to boost ticket sales and attract people back

There's a moral argument that for doing "damage" to the FISM brand it might be honorable to resign but there's no business argument to do so as he isn't an officer or employee of FISM itself and I'm quite sure no BMC members will be calling for his resignation.

/start controversial

If anyone should be resigning it's the FISM organisation people(s) who allowed a one-horse race for the initial bid and for then failing to have any scrutiny or control over their flagship event. The 2012 Olympics are being organised by a group of British people who've never run an olympics before; but there's guidance given and constant scrutiny from the International Olympic Committee to ensure that what London presents is in line with Olympic standards and is an event worthy of the brand name. I'm shocked that FISM will basically hand its entire reputation over to someone without any checks and balances and is then "surprised" that the quality of FISM events varies so wildly.

/end controversial

Who booked the performers for all the Gala shows at FISM Blackpool this year?
Derek Lever.

Who scheduled the entire convention?
Derek Lever.

Who decided what the registration fee would be?
Derek Lever.

Who created the worst FISM convention that any of us have ever been to? (Yokohama aside--I wasn't there)?
Derek Lever.

There are many more things to be said here, however because I do not have either printed confirmation nor people willing to speak on the public record, I cannot go into them. But they involve staggering ineptitude, and all involve Derek Lever.

Mr. Lever does a wonderful job of putting on the normal Blackpool convention every year, but he's a petty tyrant who decided several years ago that Genii no longer would be allowed to have a dealer stand. Ostensibly this is because I dared to state that the city of Blackpool is a dump. That is only grounds for being declared mentally sane, not being denied a dealer table. Many other people have been banned for various non-reasons.

Then there is the issue of Derek Lever's completely inappropriate comments regarding me in the opening letter to FISM attendees on the first page of the souvenir book. These are ignorant comments made by a person who obviously hasn't seen the videos he is accusing me of "supporting," and therefore has no right whatsoever to make any statement about them.

Derek Lever needs to go.
