Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (June 2012)
Member Seating is Guaranteed
(To a point.) Joe Furlow, the Magic Castles new General Manager, has made a member-friendly change to the Castles reservation policy. Beginning on June 4, the staff taking reservations will be required to hold 20 seats (at each seating) for members only. The hold is for up to seven days prior to the seating.
Cardini at the Castle
(Well, sort of.) The Castle Members Only Perk for Tuesday, June 5 will be a talk about Cardini featuring his daughter Carole and Cardini historian Brad Ball who is coming all the way from Chicago for this very special event. It starts at 8:00 PM in the Inner Circle.
Roll Out The BarrelMaybe
(And thats a beer song anyway.) There was going to be a wine tasting of various California wines on June 12, but Im lacking a little detail. When/if I learn more, I will pass it along but you may want to pencil in the date.
But Wheres Carol Merill?
(Wait, its not that Monty.) The very popular Joe Monti Sessions continue in the Peller Theatre on Monday, June 18. These monthly 2-hour-long Magician Members Only Perks are (to quote the site, and as confirmed by many attendees), designed to help you improve your magic skills, learn new effects, and give you an evening of magical fun! These are magician-only gathering and are open sessions, not lectures. So come prepared with your questions and the effects you want to perform!
Dont You Just HATE Being Lectured To?
(Unless you WANT to be.) The lecture lineup for June is another winner and starts with card legend Allan Ackerman on June 3 (be sure to get there early to guarantee a seat!). Jon Armstrong appears on June 10 (plenty of seats Im sure[only a test to see if Jon is reading this!]. Derek & Helder in the Peller is the most significant magic event of this century thus far. The magic elite are coming in from around the world. Castle Board members are waiting two hours in line to see it. The opener is destined to be a classic; the whole act perhaps the greatest close-up performance ever. Everyone -- magicians and non-magicians -- staggers out in awe. The performance and surrounding spectacle radiate a once-in-a-lifetime energy. Get in line now.

Richard, if the line went to DC it would be worth the wait to see Derek and Helder in the Peller. Saw the show last night and it was a killer. Also, Mac King came from Vegas to see the show last night. Run do not walk to the Castle to see this show.

No sign of RK last night; perhaps he slipped in with the largish David Blaine party on Thursday.

I was able to get in to see Guimares & DelGaudio on Thursday night. (Flew all the way in from Utah so I could catch their performance.) It was worth it.

Another chance next Wednesday through Sunday . . .
The spectacle of people camped out in the Inner Circle, as if for a Star Wars premier, and even the guests being abuzz needs to be covered in Genii. Hyperbole aside, it might actually be the greatest close-up magic performance ever.

Just don't try to take my seat on Sunday. If you do, your name will in Genii, but not the way you planned.

I've been a couple of times already; but I do intend to exploit my new press credential to linger imperiously around the entrance, chatting with fellow elites, and hoping an attractive female guest mistakes me for someone of actual prominence. Not that anyone actually does that. And I'll avoid Sunday.

That cracked me up. The night I went there were many quests that weren't able to get in to the show for that very reason. I was near the front of the line and thought for sure I'd get in. Turns out almost all the seats were taken by "elite" guests before the people waiting for almost two hours were let in.
I guess that's how Hollywood rolls.
I also agree though - It might have been one of the greatest magic performances, if not the best, that I have ever seen.
I walked out knowing that Magic was a legitimate art form.

I'm suppose to be going to the castle tonight as a guest, maily to see the Helder & Derek show. Do I really need to wait 2 hours to make sure I get in to see the show? Or what would be the best way to guarantee I get to see it?

Go to a big hardware store where all the day laborers gather looking for work. Get one. Put a tie and jacket on him. Pay him 20 bucks to stand in line for you for 2 hours. Go watch the other shows, or have dinner. Show time comes, send him home and in you go!

I was down in the library Monday night before Derek and Helder did a special show for some booking agents. Lots of members were hanging around, hoping to get in. Did anyone see that show? I waited two hours Sunday night and it was worth the wait. David Regal was waiting in line like everybody else. They were doing four shows. I hope that this brings them more commercial success. I suspect that they could fool Penn and Teller, probably more than once.
