Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (February 2012)
Sign of Our Times
After many decades, the AMA Newsletter will no longer be mailed to members. The January/February 2012 issue is the last hardcopy newsletter that will be produced by the Academy. Starting in March, the newsletter will be available online only. The PDF file will be printable (for we luddites that need a copy in the reading roomyou know, on the tank lid) and new editor Rich Cowley promises in the coming months that the online edition will have full color photos, active links to websites, video and other content, as well as other features available only in this remarkable digital age in which we live.
Kickoff at the Castle
Party at the Castle on Super Bowl Sunday: $15 for adults and $10 for kids includes buffet, sundae bar (hamburgers, hot dogs and brats, taco bar, Super Bowl Sundaes: Beer Specials for adults and bottomless soft drinkswhat: no pizza?) and TVs Everywhere. No RSVP necessary, pay at the door. The pre-game party starts at 1:00 in the Inner Circle. (And its not too late for them to add pizza.)
What: No Candy Hearts?
Even so, Valentines Day (night) at the Magic Castle will still be a very special night indeed. Tuesday February 14 will feature a special $65 per-person fixed-menu that includes a flight of wine. The regular menu will still be available and you can add the flight of wine for an additional $25. Also, Tina Lenert will be adding to the romance of the evening with her harp. Magic at the Magic Castle, a nice meal, a selection of wines, beautiful music all with your special someone: What more can you ask? (And its not too late for them to add the candy hearts.)
Halloween in February?
If youve never done a Houdini Sance at the Castle because the price is a little out of your range, try a non-dining version. Three sittings are available on Thursday February 16 at 6, 8, and 9:45 PM. This E-Ticket Ride costs only $35 per person.
A First for Tina
For the first time in her artistic career, the multi-talented Tina Lenert will be presenting a lecture to Castle members on February 26 at 3:00 PM in the Parlour. She will share the process that has allowed her to create four unique acts that have taken her around the world.
And the Winner is
(Oops, sorry, And the Oscar goes to ) An Oscars viewing party at the Castle is scheduled for Sunday February 26. Come and root on Hugo to win as many of its eleven nominations as possible. Details to follow.
Current Performers Schedule:

Dustin:
Do you know if the electronic newsletter will be emailed to members or will we have to log into the Castle website each month to read it?

As I understand it, you will have to go online to get it.

Good. Email is VERY expensive to send. Don't want to see any wasted money.

While I don't know for sure, I do suspect that an email notifying the members it's been posted (along with a direct link) will be sent out. They already have the infrastructure set up to do that. For me, I think that would be quite sufficient.

Oh right. So, they *will* send out an email then. Glad we got that cleared up.

AMA Members: Check the Magic Castle Members Facebook page for an announcement from Bill Goodwin (through Jon Armstrong) about extra books from the Larsen Library being for sale. There are some great titles and deals to be found.

Is that Sam Berland from Chicago?
I seem to remember him from the Round Table in the 40's and 50'.

Has anyone noticed the quality of the lecturers slide a bit?

Re: Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (February 2012)
I think that you'll need to be a little less vague. Were the lectures by Phil Van Tee and Matt Marcy not good? (I was not there, so it's not a rhetorical question.) Are having Tina Lenert, David Regal, and R. Paul Wilson (among others) in the wings examples of the lectures being on the "slide"?

Re: Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (February 2012)
Remember, today (Sunday) is Tina Lenerts first ever lecture (she prefers to think of it as a talk) at the Magic Castle; or anywhere for that matter. Ive had the good fortune of previewing the notes (I prefer to call it a monograph) and it is great if you have any desire to create an act. Be thereI will! (3:00 in the Parlour.)

The Oscars Viewing Party tonight starts at 4:30 (pre-show/red carpet arrivals in the Palace area) and then the show proper at 5:30 (in the Inner Circle). Includes a hot and cold buffet, soft drinks, games and prizes: $10 for members, $15 for guests. (No RSVP required, just make your own arrival!)
