Any news on the iPhone iPod iPad app? Is it Apple's new subscriptions rule that is causing the delay?

On the web access page, I realise you have little control, but if you have an opportunity to feed in a point can you get them to remove the single click that moves you back from the zoomed page to the non-zoom page, perhaps to a button at the top. As it is, I find the page keeps leaping back to non-zoom when I'm trying to scroll around.

Thanks any way for a great initiative on getting this up and running.

Regards

Alexander

Just a quick note: it's only available for the iPad (at least as far as I can see). You can't download to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Yes, we just got approved.

I have no control over the software being used but will ask.

Cool, just downloaded the iPad app. It's great to have these as a digital archive you can read offline. A publishing-related question -- you don't have any in-app purchase method at all, right? This app is only for print subscribers?

A few answers:

1. Not all of a company's apps get approved simultaneously, so we are waiting for the iPhone and iPod Touch apps to get approved.

2. There are no in-app purchases. The digital edition of Genii, plus all 74 years of back issues, plus the 12 paper issues, cost $56 per year for the WHOLE BUNDLE. We only sell what is called a print/digital combo.

3. Regarding the zoom function: tap twice to zoom. Place your finger firmly on the screen and move it around to scroll. Tap twice to "un"zoom. Seems to work fine for me.

It doesn't work properly for me. Certain pages (47, 58) aren't there and I get a spinning download circle. Perhaps this is a result of a poor initial download on 3G last night. How do you delete it to re-download it?

Steve, I just checked and both pages were there for me in the April 2011 issue. You can delete by going to the front page "Issues," where you can see the cover of each issue. This is the first page that comes up when you enter the app. In the upper right corner you'll see an "Edit" button. Tap it, and "X"s will appear in the corner of each cover. Tap the X on the issue you wish to delete.

Steve, did some further checking. I found the same problem as you (non-loading page and spinning wheel) on some of the pages in the November issue. I deleted it and then downloaded again. Now all the pages show up properly.

I do find that sometimes, when using the "thumbs" button, if I touch a page the app quits for some reason. I'll have that looked into.

I must say that I am really impressed with the Genii iPad app. It is much easier to use than the web-based access previously available.

I didn't download the issues, but viewed them online - worked perfectly.

I like the audio and video supplements and the easy access to your advertisers, however I couldn't get the links to work for Card-Shark, Vernet Magic and Alan Wong.

It is quite a luxury - as an international subscriber - to be able to read Genii as soon as it is published. I still look forward to receiving the printed version, however having Genii on the iPad is almost as good.

Continuing with the problem Steve noted, I enquired about it today at the company who produces the app and they suggested that I delete the app, then download it again. I did, downloaded my issues again, and touching the thumbnails has not caused the app to quit since.

Re: Genii iPad App Has Been APPROVED!

Sorry, it's still pretty glitchy.

I deleted the app and downloaded it again. I then downloaded the April issue (the only one I've played with so far).

On my first try, the thumbnail problem acted as before: it killed the app. Also on my first try, the only items that appeared at the bottom were Issues, Pages, Thumbs, and Menu. Contents and Advertisers were missing. (That had also been the case before deleting the app. At some point those choices had simply gone away.)

On my second try (second time opening the magazine), I hit the Thumbs feature and, instead of touching a thumbnail, I hit the Page button at the top which gave me a page pulldown. I selected a page and the magazine turned to it. After that, two good things happened: the thumbnails worked again, and Contents and Advertisers reappeared at the bottom. And one bad thing happened: the Page button on the Thumbs feature still gives me a page pulldown, but will no longer go to the page. The page is highlighted in the pulldown but nothing happens.

I also have a question about the Contents feature. If I use it, there is a choice of Page and Article. If I hit page, it goes to the proper page. If I hit article, I get a blank screen with the name of the article at the top. I am not sure what I am even attempting by selecting article.

(Ah, perhaps I do see, but it's a different problem. I began to download another issue of the magazine, and it listed all the articles. Is Page and Article to give you a choice of downloading a single page or an entire article? Handy if that's the case, but I'm not sure what it means once you've already downloaded the magazine.)

So, I'm a bit confused.

The app looks great, and I hope we can resolve these initial glitches.

The app is working fine for me, including thumbnails, page turning, embedded content & embedded links. I do not have the newest iPad. Mine is about 8 months old.

I take that back. I have now had the app quit a few times, usually on the thumbnails. I've also noticed that it's usually after doing using more memory/graphic intensive apps like games or photo processing which means it may be a memory handling issue. If I reboot the iPad it won't quit on me when I do the same exact things.

This morning, my Thumbs feature worked fine for quite awhile, both the thumbnails themselves and the page dropdown. Just tried again, and now the page dropdown kills the app if I click on a page number. The thumbnails themselves work ok.

The menu items Contents and Advertisers at the bottom of the page have vanished again. I have never been sure that these were even supposed to be there. Is anyone using them?

The Menus item at the bottom of the page brings up the choices Video, Audio, My Favorites, etc. If I click, say, Video, I get two rows that say Click to watch, and then I can click to launch either the page or the video footage itself. This works. However, neither of these two rows is identified. I have to click them to see what the content is.

I assume that the developer will have a chance to look at all this stuff after the weekend. Just trying to document what he needs to look at.

The Video and Audio will just bring you immediately to whatever A/V extras are in the issue. I don't think they can be labelled. Frankly, I think it's a silly thing to have. Most people are only going to acces the audio and video by clicking on the button on the actual page of the magazine to which these things are related.

I'm very glad to have this. I particularly like the search function.

Richard, I disagree that the A/V list is silly. For those of us who read the paper edition, being able to quickly access the bonuses without hunting for them is a nice idea.

I would never begin to understand Apples approval process but why, if the iPad app has been approved, why is it taking so long for the iPhone version to be approved as well?

I like the app, it's definitely more accessible and easier than using iGenii on-line, but I think it could be better. Unlike the MAGIC Magazine app, in which the magazine is reformatted to make reading easier (similar in style to what WIRED Magazine or the Wall Street Journal have done with their publications for the iPad), the Genii iPad version is more like reading a PDF version of the magazine. Having video is a great addition for a visual art like magic, though. Hopefully, videos of tricks taught in the magazine will eventually be added, and clearly advertisers are going to want to show videos of their latest tricks. I think it's a good first effort, but I think there's room for improvement.

Excellent! I'm checking it out now!

Well, it's downloaded and installed, but the app isn't letting me login to iGenii, so I can't check out any of the issues. Who should I contact about bug reports?

What I've seen so far looks great, but I haven't been able to do much due to the bug mentioned above. One other issue I see is that it appears to be a bit sluggish to respond to commands.
