The February Issue of Genii is Now LIVE Online!

Postby Richard Kaufman » January 11th, 2011, 7:47 pm

It's here! I hope you've activated your iGenii accounts, because if you have then you can log in at the link below and then click on the little flipping pages icon and read the February issue of iGenii.

http://askalexander.org/login.cgi

This month we have more audio: in addition to my rendition of "Genii Speaks," Jon Racherbaumer decided to give a more spontaneous version of "On the Slant" and talks about lots more than is in the printed column--and he teaches a trick, too.

We have a new audio column that appears only in iGenii, Max Maven's "Speaking of Max" (you'll find the button on the top of p.11).

The cover story this month by Jim Steinmeyer is on his new biography (from Tarcher/Penguin) of the great illusionist Howard Thurston, and includes both written and audio excerpts (read by author Steinmeyer).

And we've added video this month as well. On the top of p.11 you'll find a button for "More Genii Speaks," which is my maiden attempt at balancing a Flip video camera on my desk while juggling the new 10 pound book "Siegfried and Roy, Unique in All the World." I do a few tricks and talk about a few other books as well. We also have Tenyo's official video demos of their new tricks available to watch on the same page as my article about them.

Hope you enjoy it! Happy to hear suggestions for the future as we dive into digital.

Just flipped through it and watched the "More Genii Speaks" video, which is very nice and a great touch.

And when you pull out the Siegfried and Roy book, it looks some kind of video special effect has just been done and you've been shrunk.

The S&R book is enormous. You'll see that a letter drops out of the compartment beneath the book when I open it. I kept going! :)

The Racherbaumer trick is pretty nifty.

The audio/video content is a neato-keen bonus and very enjoyable, but my brain nags at me that it appears to be completely non-indexed material. A year from now, how will we be able to find Jon R explaining that nifty trick, or your performance of DeLand's Duplex Changing Cards?

We'll find some way to archive all the audio/visual material in the future.

I think it is necessary with more detailed instructions.

In Firefox, when clicking the flipping pages icon, I only arrive to a page that says "Sign Up for Geniis iPad App", and it seems impossible to get anywhere else, as the instructions say that I need to have an iPad to continue, which I don't have.

In Safari, nothing at all happens when I click the flipping pages icon.

Looks like yet another great issue! Any word on the Genii app for the iPad? I am really looking forward to carrying them around with me!

Tom, I've just checked it in both Firefox (on a PC) and Safari (on a mac) and it works fine in both cases. After clicking on the small flipping pages icon I am brought to the new issue. Do you have a pop-up blocker on? That could be causing your problem.

Waiting for iPad and iPhone app approval is never a fast process.

It seems the only way you would get the iPad message is if you are trying to log in directly to the URL rather than logging in at the normal Alexander login page, then clicking on the flipping pages icon once you have been logged in.

The "More Genii Speaks" feature is awesome! (Thank you so much for not forcing us to purchase an ipad to view the digital Genii)

Great job!

PS: Can we please see a trick from "Mr Jennings Takes it Easy" next month? Either that, or perhaps "Phoenix Aces"?! :)

Yes, I should mention that while the digital version of the "other" magazine is available only for the iPad (and costs you $4 an issue), iGenii is available on all platforms and is FREE for all subscribers.

I'm curious: when I log into the AskAlexander site and go to the GENII link the most current issues I can see are from 2009. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Which Genii Link? under Browse? Those are the archives for searching/browsing.

To get to the current issue you need to click on the Genii Icon on the AskAlexander Home page or Search Page (it's on the bottom left of the screen)

Nope, still doesn't work.

To me, it looks like a bug - but if I'm the only one with this problem, it must be something with my particular hardware/software setup (iMac, OS X 10.5.8, Firefox 3.6.13)

In Safari, a window eventually opens, after trying about 20 clicks and double-clicks on the flipping pages icon (looks like a Flash/Javascript bug). But that also redirects as in step 3-5 above.

No PopUp-Blockers are installed.

The blank values in the URL are fine.

I think your issue is resolved. Computer says, try again.

Best,
Dan

This is great news. I have a US subscription, but am home so infrequently, that I only have a chance to scoop up my issues a couple times per year...

I haven't even been able to activate my iGenii account yet, because I haven't been home to see my activation key.

In any case, I'm glad to hear that current issues are available online, and even though you're not "forcing" us to buy an iPad, a digital version of the magazine may be just the excuse I need...

Thanks,
Damian

The MAGIC iPad file was 353M. I expect Genii to be a similar size, as are other iPad magazines such as The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, etc. These should quickly start filling up the available storage. Does anyone have a long term storage strategy for what seems to be the future of magazines?

Yes, we do. All of our back issues are available now.

Other than that: there is no long-term storage for things you download on an iPad--they are seen as transitory. You pay, you use, but you don't get to keep. Just like watching a film on demand. That is the direction in which corporate America has decided you are going to move.

Hi,

I'm sorry for replying to an old thread, but I'm new to the forum and am still finding my way around. Anyway, I was wondering about video/audio content for Genii -- particularly a reference to your performance of DeLand's Duplex Changing Cards (from the Feb 2011 edition). Ever since I read about these I've been intrigued but can't find much reference to them online apart from an article in The Conjuror's Magazine from the 40s. Is the video of your performance still available, and would you know of any other resources for anyone interested in the effect?

Many thanks!

The Duplex Changing Cards are quite rare. I have the only two complete sets of them I've ever seen (though it's likely there are a few others out there). They are somewhat fragile and not for close-up use; from a short distance the faces change completely.

They'll be completely described, along with a template of the pieces so you can make them yourself, in my book on DeLand coming out at the end of this year.
