Penn and Teller - UK TV special

Postby John Archer » October 29th, 2010, 8:03 am

Apparently P & T are coming over here to film a special in December...

I don't think we have anyone who can fool them?

John :-)

Interesting premise, but surely a next to impossible task. To *fool* Teller would require either huge audacity and a ridiculously bold bit of luck, or ridiculously clever thinking. Penn is (imho) a loud mouthed juggler and not a magician, but Teller knows his onions.

Shame it is on ITV though, I detest that channel so much I had it surgically removed.

Firstly - I hate ITV as well...

Secondly - I wonder if ITV are trying to come up with a magic show to run against the BBC'S 'MAGICIANS' show which is starting in Jan/Feb of next year? Similar things have happened before - on Saturday nights - when they have ran dancing shows against each other - and when they have ran music contests against each other as well...

Oh yes, seems obvious now you've pointed it out.

I think the premise is rather stupid. That said, fooling anyone is hardly "next to impossible" -- Teller is wise and observant, but (the last time I checked) human...

I can fool Teller about 2% of the time with my unique take on the 'Any Card At Any Number' plot.

Shuffled, borrowed deck and everything. Looks amazing...

Almost any human can be misdirected if the performer is skillful enough.

Fair point Mr Maven. I meant, that from what I understand, Teller, like your good self, has a very thorough and varied knowledge of magic hence would be hard to "fool". Although, in hindsight, of course you are right. Humanity is the downfall of humanity.

I'm happy to say that I fooled Max exactly once. I used a gimmicked card and it took him about ten seconds to realize it. But I loved the hell out of that ten seconds because he had a look of surprise on his face that is rarely seen by humans.

The sense of wonder when being "fooled" is truly a wonderful thing. I remember the first time I saw Michael Close perform close up. Awesome.

Interesting points made but is misdirecting someone the same as fooling them? I could be misdirected during a card under glass routine but I don't think I'd be fooled. I would realise that I just hadn't seen the magician palm and load the card under the glass as I had looked at the wrong thing at the wrong time. If I hadn't moved and I discover that I am now sat on my signed card then I may be fooled, providing I wasn't pulled out of my seat at any point etc.

With someone as sophisticated as Teller, I don't think it's possible to fool him without misdirection playing a major part.
