I'm not reading any books at the moment because I'm writing one, but I've been playing with three tricks:

Masuda's "Wow 2"--damn incredible. The Wow gimmick is placed on top of a face-down deck. You can see the back of the top card through it. A face-up signed selection is placed into the middle of the deck. BAM--it appears on top of the deck ... you get a visible change with the Wow gimmick.

Bob Farmer's "Alice's Revenge." I like this alot. Four Queens isolated in the cardcase. Any Queen is named, and the cards are removed from the case and spread--the named Queen is blank. NO sleight of hand. ANY Queen is named (no equivoque). My cat could do it.

David Forrest's "Nothing in Transit," which is a moving hole routine. Interesting, but haven't fully worked through it yet, but like it so far. The hole is big: the size of a nickel, and the routine starts with a bang when the hole visibly jumps from card to card--that's before the slow-motion movement of the hole across a card's face. There's a bit too much reliance on turning over blocks of cards on top of the deck for the dirty work (the necessity, I think, of selling a trick that most of the people who buy it can actually do). Using a little sleight of hand might remedy that weakness. I love moving hole routines and this is a good one.

I have been reading, consecutively, The James File Volumes 1 and 2 and now Stewart James in Print, which I am about 2/3rds through. I understand this is not the normal order to read these books.

I have taken many great ideas and inspirations from these. I think his solution to ditching the extra card in a two-card transposition routine may be the best. Just last night I read a trick where, to select a card, the magician deals until the spectator rings a bell, or in James' version, stops ringing a bell. SJ casually mentions the idea of giving the spectator a party noisemaker; I assume he meant one of these:

This is a great idea for so many reasons.

"One Degree" by John Guastaferro and practicing his "Homage to HOming". I like this book very much so far. Might add a few more of his tricks to my repertoire.

Impossibilia by John Bannon. There is many tricks in there that I want to learn.

September MAGIC. Has been practicing Ken Niinuma version of Bannon's "Play it Straight Triumph".

I've recently finished reading the collected Works of Alex Elmsley vol 1 which I've just bought. Now looking for buying vol.2 as the first book is just great.

In the DVDs department I've just finished viewing Ortiz "Scams and Fantaisies". His more relaxed appearance IMHO. Still don't know how he can make even the most simple of thing looks like a "Move".

I'm also viewing James Brown "Professional Opportunist vol 1". Like it very much so far.

Tabman reading Stewart James? I can't fathom why. But there must be some connection. I'm getting a great big pain in my head trying to figure it out.
