Neil Patrick Harris Rocked on the Emmy Awards Tonight

Postby Richard Kaufman » September 20th, 2009, 11:19 pm

Genii's September cover boy Neil Harris hosted tonight's Emmy Awards and by all accounts did a knock-out job. Check out the New York Times live blog here:

He was fantastic. At least two award winners took the time to congratulate Neil on the job he was doing.

Here's the opening number from the show last night: Put Down the Remote.

Also notable about NPH is the fact that the internet show he worked on, "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" not only won an Emmy despite never airing on TV, but they were also allowed to break into the Emmy broadcast with an amusing little interlude: Dr. Horrible cuts into the Emmy broadcast.

Rats -- I missed it, opting instead for a rare full night of television, including PBS Mystery and Teller's Macbeth. The latter was awesome: the magic was baffling and the blood was copious, but it was the acting that put this production over the top. The Porter was hilarious.

Neil Patrick Harris really seems to be riding a wave at the moment - his popularity continues to grow. Absolutely fantastic.

A wonderful touch of magic in the opening number, too ;-)

Word is that we'll be seeing Neil do much less magic in the future in his TV appearances. His career is obviously on an upward track, and I was told that his manager has insisted he do less magic and make fewer references to magic because people think it's geeky.

I hope Neil pushes back on that, because he's exactly the kind of person that can (and would) make magic less geeky.

Neil's manager needs to get out more and see what people have paid to see, both historically and currently. Dante wasn't geeky. Blackstone Senior and Junior weren't geeky. David Copperfield (a MAJOR theatrical attraction for 20 years) isn't geeky. Lance Burton isn't a geek. John Calvert is about as far from a geek as you can get. Derren Brown, currently the reigning mentalist is the world, isn't remotely geeky.

Being a magician didn't seem to hurt Harry Anderson's career. If anything, Harry played to it.

With the exception of one or two people who exist on television playing the part of a magician (but can't deliver in person) major theatrical magicians aren't geeks.

And about last night: I thought Neil was about as polished and professional as you can get. He did an excellent job.

Ditto. Neil did a terrific job, and the show for the most part was entertaining. The set was outstanding, and Neil's magical appearance from the panels was right out of Tarbell. Loved his feigned disgust when he didn't win the Emmy. Bravo! PS Can't say I've seen "Mad Men" but "30 Rock" is very funny.

It was like watching someone hit a 3 hour home run. Just a fantastic job.

I wasn't aware this was available for watching. Was it broadcast on your local PBS? I can't find any evidence of it on the PBS website.

Jim Swain noted in an interview that he has chosen not to identify himself as a magician in public for similar reasons.

Bill,
There was another thread on this. Teller's play is available on DVD included in a book, Macbeth, the Folger Shakespeare DVD Edition. It's only $16 retail and available from Amazon for a little over $10. It's likely at your local Border's (where I got mine) or Barnes and Noble today.

Swain's most recent mystery novels were straight-up thrillers, rather than the Casino-scam-based Tony Valentine books. Another case of distancing oneself from sleight of hand? (or more likely, he's done everything he wants to do with that character).

I just spoke to Neil, and for what it's worth... he stated that he'll continue to do and promote magic whenever he gets a chance via TV appearances and in anything that he does. Heck, he even did a bit during his hosting of the Emmys!

Thanks Neil!
