Dean Dill

Postby Dustin Stinett » August 3rd, 2009, 4:58 pm

Unless you have been therewhether personally or a close loved onehearing the C word dropped on you is an experience that cannot be described. When Dean was first diagnosed, his initial reaction was to keep it quiet. We here at the Genii Forum honored those wishes.

Now that he has had more time to think about and prepare for the challenges ahead of him, Dean has decided that it would be beneficial for us to speak about him and cancer. The reason for this change of heart is simple and very important: Catching this disease, which has so many forms that they are near countless, in its earliest possible stages. That means screening: Both men and women (and guys, if you dont think its possible for you to get breast cancer, I am here to tell you that you are wrong).

For some it might be annual checkups while maybe its only every five years or so for others; but the importance of doing it cannot be underestimated. My father was a healthy guy who didnt see his doctor on a regular basis. By the time it was discovered, his prostate cancerone of the most easily found and, when found early, highly curablewas too far advanced to be stopped.

My mother ignored the symptoms of cervical cancer and by the time she went to a doctordragged there by my brotherit had metastasized to her chest cavity and then her brain.

Cancer is scary, but it doesnt go away when its ignored. Know your risks and your family history and get screened accordingly because threads like this are no fun.

Dustin

PS: We also have the green light to post the donation site for Dean that has been set up by Paul Gross of Hocus Pocus Magic:

Well said, Dustin, well said.

If I may be so bold--in addition to screening, it is also important to please consider speaking with your physician on how to get help to make any necessary lifestyle alterations to reduce your risks for certain cancers as well.

It's actually encouraging how many interventions there are these days to help people quit habits they thought were impossible to drop.

I realize it's a touchy subject, and I mean no offense; however, I truly wish some of my dear ones had been able to beat those habits that led to their suffering and eventual demise.

I had a family friend that IGNORED symptoms and was in denial and wouldn't see a Dr. He has left a wife and five children behind.

My father had rectal cancer at age 50 -- he had early detection and care and we didn't bury him until he was 94.

In two weeks I go in for a colonoscopy exam.

As my Doctor says, "You do what you have to do."

I saw Dean two nights ago and he was cutting someones hair, then posed for some photos of a trick we are working on.

Dean will win this one. His stamina AND HIS FAITH will prevail.
Stay tooned.

I'm going to a funeral on Wednesday for a friend who had liver cancer. She did everything right, but still couldn't get on top of the disease. So sometimes you just never know.

There are many cancers that are still difficult or impossible to stop. But a lot of cancers that used to have foregone death sentence conclusions are now among those with high survival rates.

A good friend of mine works for the American Cancer Society which has many great programs and research geared toward fighting, preventing, and managing these diseases.

I think we also need to remember the actor Wendie Jo Sperber (daughter of Bert Sperber) who lost her fight to breast cancer in 2005. Now Bert puts on the WeSpark fund raiser every year at the Magic Castle to raise money for WeSpark a free cancer support group. I'm blessed that early detection of Melanoma on my Left shoulder lead to only a very large scar and screenings every 3 months by my doctor. Nothing new in two years!

Let's help Dean all we can. If you are not able to donate, I know he would welcome your prayers

Best wishes to Dean for a complete recovery. Having good friends sending you good wishes has to help the positive attitude I would imagine.

If you are going to MAGIC LIVE, we'll have copies of Dean's fine book, INTIMATE MIRACLES by Tim Trono available in our booth and all proceeds will go to Dean. Author Tim Trono will be in the booth to sign copies on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The book now comes with a DVD of Dean's appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (formerly it came with a VHS video, now converted to DVD format).

News update on Dean Dill, with his permission, here is the update.

Thank you everyone for the support and well wishes.

Last week I had my last CT PET scan.

It came out good. Liver not effected and only one lymph in my pelvis. And it has not spread. I am starting Chemo and Radiation next Wednesday for about 5 to 6 weeks. Then surgery. After surgery I will be on Chemo for another 6 mos possibly.

I feel good physically at this point. No pain in the area. That is all I know for now.

I'm just updating this thread in light of a recent rumor that was spreading about Dean. Despite what anyone may have heard, he is continuing to do well, and started his first treatment today. I'm sure we'll continue to get updates as he continues his treatment.

Thanks,
Jim
