FISM Day 6 and the Results - Friday

Postby CraigMitchell » July 30th, 2009, 11:22 pm

Today is the last day of FISM China ... the week has simply flown by. We anxiously await the announcement of the 'official' results ... but big congratulations to both Marc Oberon & Shawn Farquhar who we do know have made it to the Grand Prix Close-up Finals.

This should be quite the contest ;-)

I am one of the biggest fans of FISM possible I grew up reading Genii magazine and reading Bill Larsens reports. Bill would have never dreamed of how far technology has come an how FISM is reported on now. This week has been wonderful for those of us who didnt attend FISM. I really felt like I was in China and I feel Bill Larsen would have been very proud of Genii Magazine this week... I was. Great job Craig and Richard and to all who are keeping us posted for someone who truly loves FISM like I do. THANK YOU VERY MUCH KEEP IT COMING ! GOOD LUCK SHAWN ROCK THE HOUSE BUDDY.

Comedy Magic
- 1st place ... not awarded
- 2nd place ... Brynolf & Ljung - Sweden

Mentalism
- 1st place ... not awarded
- 2nd place ...
tie - Nicolai Friedrich - Germany - and Rob & Emiel - Netherlands
- 3rd place ... Tony Montana - Argentina

Stage Illusions
- 1st place ... Julius Franck - Germany
- 2nd place ... Magic Sky Group - China
- 3rd place ... not awarded

General Magic

Manipulation
- 1st place ... tie - Yo Kato - Japan - and Han Seol-Hui - Korea
- 2nd place ... Sebastian Nicolas - Germany
- 3rd place ... An Ha Lim - Korea

And what is an awards show without some controversy ;-) Mentalist Juan Ordeix ( who had received a standing ovation for his act ) was disqualified for having used stooges which is contrary to FISM rules.

No major surprises in the results & there seems to be general consensus all round. The 1st place winners ( besides Julius Franck who is unable to participate due to a cast member injury ) compete this evening in the Grand Prix finals.

Excitement is mounting ... FISM magic is in the air.

I wouldn't say there were no surprises: seeing An Ham Lim effectively come in at 4th place in manipulation is hard to believe. He is, in my opinion, probably the best manipulator in the world at this point. I look forward to seeing the acts that beat him tonight and will view them with a critical eye.

Surprises - yes ( everyone will always have their favourites ) ... but major "completely out the blue" surprises ... not so sure. Manipulation is definitely up for discussion ( personally I would have expected An Ha Lim higher - but as Richard says - will need to watch with a close eye tonight and see how the others stack up ) Other point of interest was the non-awarding of a 1st prize in Mentalism - mentalism hasn't had a 1st prize winner for years now at FISM - with some asking what exactly constitutes an award-winning FISM mentalism act.

Rocco has been fighting a losing battle in having his fake D'Lites removed from the dealer's room. Check out Tim's blog for the full story - but the place appears to have been filled with knockoff tricks, poor enforcement of FISM rules and general apathy amongst the organisers to effectively address the situation.

The local press for FISM China has been incredible. Besides press - the event has been featured daily on China TV.

Has the rules been changed again btw? If I am not mistaken, in last FISM at Stockholm, anyone who got over 80 points did have a change to compete in the "finals"? There was at least David Stone, Farquhar, Merill and Eisele from close-up at finals?

Also, the grand prix winners didnt win their own category in a sense. For example, Rick Merill won the Close-up GP and therefore Martin Eisele was declared the winner of close-up??? Now however, the winners of categories are anounced?

I believe that An Ham Lim's lower than expected placement is just because of the FISM rating system. 20% from points comes from originality and lets be honest, card manipulation is just card manipulation, no matter how well you do it... You cant give too much points for its orginality :( That might have costed some needed points from him. More about the judging criterias can be seen at

This, I believe, is the last contest I will ever do ... I promised my Wife. It was a super great convention and to be able to share the stage with Marc Oberon was a joy. He is an outstanding magician and I am honored to be awarded the Grand Prix World Championship of Close Up Magic.

When my feet touch the ground I will have to go look for another piece of luggage!

I have another few weeks in China and the onto the Asia World Magic Seminar in Japan ... oh and Sorcerer's Safari where I will be a special guest this year ...

Life is sweet ...

Thanks to everyone for their good wishes.

Sincerely,

Shawn

Re: FISM Day 6 and the Results - Friday

Postby CraigMitchell » August 1st, 2009, 10:34 pm

I'm currently sitting at Beijing airport about to depart after having experienced a whirlwind week of magic at FISM. Yesterday saw Tim Ellis, Sue-Anne Webster, Boris Wild and myself and an intrepid group of crazy Australians tackle some of the sights including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It's been an adventure-filled time for all and worth looking back at the event in summary.

When China was first announced as hosts of FISM 2009 - the decision was greeted with much derision. With a bid campaign unlike any other - delegates from across the globe were flown out on pre-inspection trips as guest of the Chinese government - it soon became clear that China was going to win- no matter what. After the initial protests died down, it was down to the real work ... and things from an outside perspective did not look too rosy. Could a society of acrobats run the World Championships of Magic ? Would the event be over-run with acts from Asia ? Were rip-offs going to be everywhere ? Language was an issue - information was often limited and with the constant changing of venues - uncertainty was fast creeping in. Even those at the top privately had their doubts.

But one week ago - 2500 magicians from around the world arrived in Beijing to a royal welcome. And for the most part, FISM China delivered and surpassed on what they promised.

From a delegate's perspective - organisation was good, registration a breeze and the quality and class of their registration product - unmatched. The hospitality and spectacle of the gala banquets simply dazzling, the acrobats and speciality entertainment beyond compare. Contests were a breeze and the jury sailed through 138 acts without hitch. The contest standard as a whole was down - but those at the top still excelling.

There were issues no doubt - some avoidable, a few tolerable and others inexcusable. The Close-up Gala show abysmal in a 2500 seat venue, a theatre with flat seating not conducive to performance and early registrants receiving amongst the worst of seats. Press coverage was amongst the best we've had and the worst we've had - with English Internet media ignored. The Dealers room was particularly small this year and the inability or reluctance of FISM to handle the blatant knock-offs disappointing. Scheduling was a bit thin for some with a definite need to return to a greater number of lecturers ( and a full start on day 1 ) with more variety and choice. Consult the programme of FISM Dresden to that of China and the difference is staggering.

In terms of convention facilities and accommodation - you could not ask for better. All were world class, shining and brand new, with happy staff only too eager to help. Food court worked well, prices amazingly affordable, the magic salon a hit and I only heard raves about the late night sessions. The Opening Ceremony was a tad dry but the main Awards Show amongst the swiftest and smoothest ever. Gala shows catered for all - and while those backstage had their hands full with often difficult crews and constant chain-of-command issues - they ultimately managed to pull it together and deliver the goods ( kudos to Mike Miller and co )

Overall, Lin Jian and his entire team of FISM 2009 deserve our thanks and congratulations.

The most unforgettable moment from Beijing ? Climbing the Great Wall of China with some of my best friends in magic.

The most unforgettable moment from FISM ? Watching Shawn Farquhar take home the Grand Prix and the look of sheer joy on his daughter's face.

FISM isn't about a convention. It's about people and a chance to create lasting memories for a lifetime.

Savour the experience.

What a great summation of a fantastic event. It had so many highs and very few lows. This is only my third FISM, but by far the best I have been to ... go figure! Thanks Craig for taking so much time to report and review FISM. Oh and by the way ... your unforgettable moment at FISM was the same as mine ... ;-)
