That is called 'The Big Lie' it was defined by Hitler in his 1925 book Mein Kampf as a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.

Apparently the particular quote under discussion, though, predates Mein Kampf, and was uttered by Vladimir Lenin.

Actually the quote from Lenin was:

I really don't know for sure but I'm guessing the original quote was probably in Russian, and has been translated into English in a number of different ways?

Right, like the guy's name was really Lenin. ;)

Funny how we can decry one lie while propagating others.

I haven't seen the show and I am surprised that Mindfreak Criss would go the route of a Las Vegas fixture show. Perhaps this is also a commentary on this being one too many Cirque productions or perhaps a limit on the type of magic suitable for the LV scene? A friend after a recent visit to Vegas came back saying he got 'Cirqued-out' there. Where's Sinatra or Elvis when you need them?

I hope the problems get put behind him and the show does well for his sake and all parties involved.

HA! Fyi...the new Cirque show that is being installed in the new City Center Project as we speak is an Elvis themed show! No joke!

I've seen Believe three times. Going to the gala premiere this Friday. From someone who has actually seen the show...it has tightened up significantly...AND btw, the lip-syncing is out at the end thank goodness!

The show was initially running close to two hours...from what I hear it's a tight 90 minutes now...give my full report this weekend! Going to the Gala and the party afterwards...

I still contend it's not as bad as everyone who jumps on the "I hate CA" bandwagon thinks. At least he's not doing friggin' Cube Zag and Origami! The "Interlude" style illusion is cool as the vines that it is composed of come up from the floor and capture him...cool.

Robin Leach reports ...

Bankrolling a major Strip spectacular is a major financial undertaking - not just in these uncertain economic times but any time! Meet Luxor President Felix Rappaport, who made the ultimate $100 million bet on Cirque du Soleil and Mindfreak magician Criss Angel to underwrite their new partnership -- and his 15-year-dream to bring Believe to fruition.

Now, just four days away from the glittering and glamorous first night gala, the MGM corporate executive is cool and calm about the mega-million dollar commitment he made the final go-no-go solo decision on. He told me: Ive been through this before. I understand how the creation process works - and all that it takes to go from idea to final execution. I was at our other MGM hotels when Cirque launched Mystere and Zumanity along with their other Vegas shows. I have never met a more disciplined hard working star than Criss to ensure this works as a huge winner. I have absolute belief in Guy Laliberte and his Cirque team of creators and that they are 100 percent behind this being a total success.

I know neither of them will rest until it is the best. The audiences will tell us what they like and want and I feel comfortable with all the progress the process has made since the first day of previews a month ago. Criss and Cirque will go on tweaking -- thats the way it is but I can tell you it is a spectacular entrance for the audience and just as spectacular a finale for them to remember.

Rappaport acknowledged that some people who saw the first preview showcase were unhappy about certain aspects of the show. Its come a mighty long way -- 10 times better -- since then. There were so many construction and permit difficulties making a new showroom specially for this show. Its turned out to be an incredibly marvelous and beautiful theater. Once previews got underway all the additional new illusions could be worked in - and now they are all working incredibly well in Believe. Some members of the initial audiences didnt even notice the other cast illusions because they focused everything on Criss but now people are understanding the show they see all of its other aspects of creativity. There are over 20 magical elements in this production - not as stand-alones but as an integral part of the storytelling - and thats a real first.

Like all Cirque shows this is a tremendous evolution process but it will be the best show possible - and it will continue evolving even five or six months after this week -- so that it will be a solid 10-year hit and beyond even that. Our faith has been borne out already with four fully sold out preview weeks. The gross was $5 million and in terms of daily sales

Believe is averaging higher or equal to all the other Cirque shows here. Cirque never leaves a show alone even when its up and running -- they go on always improving it for the better and the same will be true here.

The casino resort president told me that he and Criss are expecting a full turnout of stars -- including numerous Vegas-based magicians and Strip entertainers - for Fridays celebrity gala on the black carpet and at the Halloween-themed pool party after the premiere performance. It will be a fabulous night - the best that show-business can be, he promised.

Luxe Life returns with Day 3 of our countdown tomorrow - after my backstage visit to Criss following tonights kickoff to the final week of previews. Luxe Life will interview Criss, Guy, director and co-writer Serge Denoncourt on Friday just hours before the curtain rises - and well have all of that incredible first night coverage with videos, photos and stories here at our new VegasDeluxe site as of 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

"Criss and Cirque will go on tweaking ..."

Too bad for all the people who pay full price for their tickets in the first six months since they're evidentally seeing an unfinished show:
"Like all Cirque shows this is a tremendous evolution process but it will be the best show possible - and it will continue evolving even five or six months after this week."

This is called damage control. They've had over a year to get this thing in shape for opening, with rehearsals since last January.

The real acid test is 6 months from now - the hype has died down and the show needs to compete for scarce entertainment dollars.

A show that's not earning money is no good for either Luxor or Cirque.

Tomorrow night is the official press night for Believe and the Luxor is holding a press conference Halloween morning for reporters. There should be lots of interesting questions from reporters on Friday due to the show's poor reviews so far. Hopefully, tomorrow night's show will be better then the reviews so far. I will be covering the events on my blog.

So, back from Vegas today, and I have seen Believe with my own eyes. It's, ummmm, not great. It is not, in fact, the worst show I have ever seen. But for the money spent, and the talent involved, its ugly.

Some perspective. Ive seen a ton of magic shows big and small over the years. And if there is one thing I love as much as a magic show, its Cirque. Ive seen every show in Vegas, the one in Orlando, and the last 4 or 5 touring shows. I love Cirque completely.

Believe is not a good Cirque show. And it is not a good magic show. And therein lies the problem. There is a fundamental disconnect at the heart of the show, and I fear that cannot be fixed with tightening and scripting and tweaks. Cirque shows are BUILT around the idea that you will see awesome (and legitimate) human feats. Even though that *can* exist in magic, magic carries with it the idea that somehow, there is a shortcut ("the secret") that makes it easier than it looks. And these two contrary ideas are never reconciled. Its not Cirque-y enough for Cirque, and note magical enough to play as a magic show.

Here are my own observations:

Crowd reaction was tepid at best. Right after a big climax, the music cuts, and ..... crickets. Polite applause, maybe. I felt bad for the performers.

I get the whole "you can see the wires" bit. They are highlighted on the Cirque performers (seriously, in the spotlight) so attention is called to the fact that you CANNOT see them attached to Criss. You know, its REAL when he does it. But thats quite the suspension of disbelief required, and it is never fully achieved here.

The use of doubles was horrifically obvious. As in audience members looking at eash other and saying "are you kidding me?" But at least thats something that can be addressed with costumes and blocking and staging. But its BAD, and I saw this 5 days before the Premiere.

Criss needs to talk less. Seriously. The show does in fact have its moments, but then it comes to a grinding halt and struggles to regain any momentum. This is usually the result of Criss having a mic in his hand. The whole Long Island Goth thing isnt just incongruous, its jarring and completely upsets one of Cirques main strengths, which is transporting you to a dream world and KEEPING YOU THERE. And its not edgy and tough and cool to swear and make genital-based jokes. It comes across as pathetic and desperate and sad. Cirque revels in bawdy humor but this is decidedly NOT that.

I went to "O" again 2 nights later, after starting my evening seeing McBride at Palace station. My faith in Cirque AND live magic was restored all in one night. IF this show wasnt down the street from O, Mystere, KA, Blue Man, etc etc it might have a chance. But not in this environment.

My two favorite entertainment forms are live magic and Cirque. I cannot in good conscience recommend this show to anyone. And that makes me sad.

My initial reaction to the "world premiere" tonight of Believe was that it was not worth the price of my admission, which was free.

I sat in the best seats with about 30 other journalists for the "official" press night and everyone I spoke with had the same reaction - really awful. Most are not even going to the "interview" opportunity tomorrow because they can't think of anything positive to ask. Questions that ran through our minds were "Why not more magic?" "Why not good magic?" "Is this really a Cirque show?" "Can someone please tell CA to be quiet and just do some magic?" "Did you see that wire when he pulled out the dove?" and "Do they really think we can't tell that that is a double?" These are real quotes from reporters.
I am an amateur magician, and even I could see the mistakes. The reporters around me kept saying, out loud, "you have to be kidding." People on the side aisles who paid full price left half way through and were complaining so loudly that we could hear them. If you want to see magic in LV, go see Lance Burton or Mac King. If you want to see a Cirque show, see LOVE. In no way is Believe either a magic or a Cirque show. there were about five illusions (if you want to call them that) in the show, with only one garnering applause (houdini escape over the audience, which in fact was quite good) the rest was full of Criss Angel talking, mostly about himself. Do not waste your money or your time.

It would appear that criticism of the show has now reached such levels that Angel is no longer taking any interviews from the press - and Cirque are back tracking from all of their lofty claims of re-inventing magic:

http://www.lvrj.com/news/33628279.html

But a more dominant opinion from previews is that "Believe" is light on astonishment; that the magic doesn't hold up to Angel's claims of "revolutionary illusions" that "reinvent magic like Cirque did for the circus."

Angel even claims one illusion uses technology "developed for two people in the world." One client is NASA, "for the space shuttle," and the other is him.

Denoncourt qualifies those claims. "What was misinterpreted, I think, was everybody was expecting new magic. That doesn't exist.

"There (are) six famous tricks in the world. ... You can disappear, you can fly, it's all the same tricks. What makes a big difference is the envelope; what's around (the illusion). That's where the show is different."

Both director and magician point out the classic illusions are staged in new ways, without boxes to conceal them.

I saw the show on Oct 25th. Perhaps the most shocking thing to me were the three censored jokes that Angel uses during a sequence where he's berating his assistants (clowns) over how slowly they're building a mechanical monster. "C'mon, you put this together every night, how hard can it be?" (And that's not one of the aforementioned jokes, btw.) I'm not in any way a prude, but it just seems too incongruous with Cirque and they come out of left field.

The audience began streaming towards the exits during the curtain call, before the show was over, and the house lights were still down. Not a good sign.

Folks,

It's Halloween and his opening night. How about for just a few hours till the show has had its premiere we leave off the ill will and sour grapes at his expense? Just till after the word comes back from the legit press as to how the show was for those attending its opening?

There's still Lidsville and Merlin to learn from,

Well, it comes down to what Nathan wrote before his post disappeared. He commented along the lines that there is a distinct difference between how the public perceives magic and how magicians want the public to perceive magic. Regarding Angel, is what he's done good for magic? As a collective society of magicians, is what he does how we would like the public to perceive magic? If yes, then okay...more power to him. If not, though, then perhaps it helps magic for him to go away, and that process starts with his show taking the dive that some people already say it deserves.

LA Times:

"This was a brave experiment, but at some point, the fact that it simply does not work will have to be reckoned with one way or the other."

"All I could think about watching Criss Angel's "Believe" was the movie "Showgirls" and Elizabeth Berkley's Nomi Malone, the nomad who goes from stripper to Strip showgirl. Angel's journey from street magician to Strip headliner is a similarly implausible story, but more so, it is his show that really manages to capture the so-bad-it's-good spirit of the movie. "

"Sadly, no magic or miracle saved the muddy mix of Cirque and Criss Angel from turning into quicksand."

I did my annual garage magic show for the neighbood, and about 250 people showed up (more than normal), Did an appearance, levi, zigzag, handcuff escape, etc.

What's funny is a few of the neighbors were talking about Criss after the show and they say he does TV magic and he couldn't do a show like mine live, since he needed a camera to do his tricks.

I just grinned and said 'thank you'.

Can't wait to see his review tonight, I do hope it's good, for magic's sake.

The trap doors and wires that I think they're talking about are those used by Cirque performers--not for magical purposes by Criss. There's a real problem here because they're "flying" Cirque performers on visible cables, while there are levitations in the show using "invisible" wires. Ditto for the traps.
Laymen see wires and traps and assume those are supposed to be unseen because it's a magic show.

Can you imagine every night giving yourself gifts from the audience.)(An on stage camera operator shoots Crisss every movement and the audience sees picture on a giant screen that fills the entire background)(Criss calls the camera operator a bitch. Which is a bit surprising since we dont understand the show yet.)
4) Criss Vanishes behind giant I Love You Criss cloth and reappears in audience.
5) ESP effect (lock box from ceiling) Wellington product. Criss shouts alot at the audience much like a Rock Star to a wild crowd only there was not a wild crowd.

13) Dove Act: Fire fingers to 2 doves, A tree set brought on for doves to fly on to, Glove to 1 dove, Red scarf to 2 doves, Dove vanish (toss up) to white silk, White silk flys into audience, then across audience and finally back to a bird cage where the white silk turns into a dove in the cage, Dove taken out and Criss splits dove into 2 doves, 3 dove costumed girls float down from ceiling on visible wires, 100 white doves released and they fly to back of audience, Criss floats up into ceiling with giant wings (magically?).
14) Snow scene with lots of white confetti. Floor trap opens and set piece comes up out of trap.
15) Flowers (poppies) drop from ceiling to stage and stick standing up to floor. Kind of like flower darts. (Very nice). Criss sits on set piece and visibly goes down trap. (Why?)
16) Large poppies, a giant rabbit on stilts, great music and all visually beautiful. All very Cir style.
17) Giant red censored? is lowered midway to stage. It opens up and an aerialist comes out to perform from it. (Lighting amazing.)
18) Roots scene: Roots visually grow on the stage by way of scrim projections. (Awesome scenery!)
19) Interlude performed with wire set piece/chair. (You cant tell whats going on. No reaction from audience.)
20) Switch illusion: A girl in a white costume is put behind a white cloth and a girl in a red costume is put behind a red cloth. The white cloth is pulled away and the girl has vanished. The red cloth is pulled away and the girl has turned into a wire form in the shape of the girl. The wire form has a red silk scarf attached to it. (Very confusing and no reaction)
21) Dancing Bunny Head: (Great! Just a costume but really works! Obviously Cirs.)
22) Head Drop illusion: Criss wears a big cape and has his head slide down the front of his costume. (Audience not too impressed) Cris then is turned into a tiny doll of him self (a lot of cover used). Tiny Criss doll is then put in a chair and covered. When cloth pulled off doll has grown to Criss original size. (Not well staged. Do we care?)
23) Big dance scene: Criss sits in a chair to stage left and watches the dance scene while ad speaking words that make no sense. Criss joins dance at end and dances.
24) There are a lot of jokes that refer to the censored. (Do not understand why. A lot of kids are in the audience and I m not sure why Criss needs to discuss the human antinomy in a sexual way)
25) Music similar to the theme music of 6 feet Under (HBO show) used a lot.
26) A giant lizard man is built and comes to life. The lizard runs around the stage after Criss which seems to take forever. (Again do we care?)
27) Switch: Criss Vanishes and Lizard takes head off to reveal Criss as the Lizard. (illusion did work and audience finally reacted.)
28) Criss does a series of video projection screen tricks with the giant back ground screen. He walks into the screen and is seen in the picture. Then walks out of it. (ala David Copperfield)
29) He takes a rubber circle the size of a man hole cover and tosses it on the stage floor. He pulls the cover open and jumps down a hole in the stage. Then reappears in the video screen. Then repeats coming back out on the stage. (Did not really work. He should have done the man hole cover on a table top so when he jumps through you see him vanish visually.)
30) Series of costume changes by walking in to the video screen and coming out of the video in a new costume. (He did this 5 times! Raja leaned over to me and said Ok I think we get the idea!)
31) Straight Jacket escape over the heads of the audience. :30 sec clock used and mirror confetti dropping in audience (Did not use any audience member to put him in jacket. No build up. Audience not impressed)
32) Sub Trunk Escape: Done with Fog and Fire (a lot of it) (But it did get a reaction. Criss has been doing this effect for many years.)
33) Wedding scene- (Yes Criss gets married!) Train of girl extends to entire back drop. (Very beautiful) (Cir again) From the ceiling Criss walks down the backdrop (wedding train) with no visible means of support. Wedding train is white with silver eyelash and a diffraction pattern is projected on the backdrop. When Criss gets to the floor he is in complete darkness. About 3 dancers are messing around with him until they can get him detached. Then he runs to the foot lights for his applause.
34) Windstorm scene: (Kind of fun.) (Again very Cir)
35) Levitation: Wedding girl is levitated (It should be a double levi like Lances but it was just her tonight. A rain curtain was used for cover)
36) Sawing in Two: A huge Mad Max looking prop is brought on to saw Criss in two. It is done visually. (Feet & legs wobble around a lot. Here less should be more)
37) Bows: At close Criss vanishes him self on a raised table under a cloth that reads Believe

Comments:

Raja and I both felt like the show was very long. We came to the conclusion that we were both bored a lot of the time. The magic really was not impressive. No one seems to get it in the Criss Angel team. I think they need to go back and re-read the history books of magic so they will understand why and how an audience should react to magic.

I looked around a lot at the audience during the show and reactions were very subtle..A very quiet audience. It was a family audience too. There were some Mind Freak fans but a small portion of them. They were the only ones who stood up. A very few.

The show was very tight and the transitions were good. But when every one got up from their seats at the end you could almost hear a pin drop. I know what its like to walk out of a great show that leaves you inspired. The audiences are feeling great and there is a buzz of energy. Here, last night it was almost like leaving a funeral.

When I got into the lobby I started to hear the bad comments. Worst magic show I have ever seen, Why did he do that show?!, That was really bad, I cant imagine their having opening night tomorrow.

I tried to listen for positive comments but I heard not one. In fact the last comment I heard was If I wrote the head lines for Tomorrows opening I would say I Believe this show Stinks!

Thanks, Jarrett! Great write-up! I felt like I was there (but was kinda glad I wasn't!)

I'm still waiting for mainstream reviews to appear. So far I can't locate anything with Google.

Anyone find any reviews from last night's premier? They aren't even doing the show tonight, which is pretty weird.
