Next MAGIC Live! Convention Dates Announced

I received my June issue of MAGIC today and it has a full page ad announcing the dates of the next MAGIC Live! convention:
August 16 to 19, 2009.

My hunch is that Stan Allen is hoping a lot of folks are not going to FISM in China. He may be right from the comments most folks seem to be making.

FISM or Magic Live ... choices, choices, choices

From what I've been hearing - very few Americans will be making the trip to China ... so Stan could be in for a bumper event ;-)

He sells out each time at 800+, which is the maximum amount the theater in the Orleans can hold (and the dead cheap room rates there don't hurt). He hasn't stated which hotel he's going to hold the 2009 convention at, though.

Stan and his staff do such an Amazing and Fantastic job hosting Magic Live, almost too good to be true.

I remember going to the then "only one, never to be repeated" Magic Live many years ago. Stan swore, never again. It was a great event then and can only surmise recurring gatherings are just as good.

There were two things that still stick out in my mind at that convention. The separate David Blaine and Billy McComb interviews. David was clearly speaking from another planet and well Billy was Billy. Let's just say I recall Max getting in about 1 1/2 questions before Billy took off in splendid flight.

I recall one potent statement on retaining history about an prop and handling that he and I believe a english gentleman (can someone help me out here) crafted. He went on to say an american collector bought it up without an inkling of interest in the origins of the effect and original handling - Dav...uh he just wanted it. Billy went on to say something to extent, "If someone doesn't come and pick my brain soon, we will lose a lot of magic history". I was sorry to find upon his death that in a large part these opportunities were not captured on tape, in book or video.

On a side note, I was at the Castle this week and saw the wonderful time-lapse photograph of Billy performing his birdcage vanish near a larger than life portrait of him in the Parlour foyer. A simply brilliant effect live as well in photo.

I missed #1 and #3. I was thinking about the Cups Convention earlier in the summer, and also a trip to NY for a week to study with a few jazz musicians. It will be a tough call.

You fellows had me nervous that Magic Live! was actually on the same dates as FISM!

Such is not the case, however. I am signed up for Magic Live!, but it is quite possible to make FISM also, which is what I was hoping to do.
