Great issue! Recieved mine 2 days ago here in Santa Cruz, CA.

By the way, I think delaying the dealers' issues is brilliant. Ever since I subscribed to WIRED Magazine, it's pissed me off to see issues at my local supermarket a week before I get it. Makes me feel less wired.

Thanks Richard

My copy of Genii finally made it to the distant south banks of the Potomac in the hinterlands of Northern Virginia today....

...a truly outstanding issue!! I may have to spend more than 2 hours on this one.

The latest issue just arrived (6/20). Nice editorial, Richard. Concerning your book on Edward Victor, we still have a few on hand. How many cases would you like?

H & R's copies arrived today. Can you explain the logic of delaying shipment to shops? Since shops purchase multiple subsciptions (12 in our case), why should our copies be held back at all? Retail subscribers get the benefit of direct delivery and reduced cost per issue, the fact that they are shipped by different means which may delay home subscriber delivery would seem to be a fair trade off. On the other hand, brick and mortar shops would surely like to have copies as soon as possible, and many dealers (ourselves included) not only commit to multiple subscriptions but advertise as well. So why the change in policy?

got my copy today....6/20. at magic inc.does this new policy mean every yahoo in alabama who can write his name on a mailbox and owns a svengali deck is now entitled to get his copy a week or more before the magic shops?

especially ironic, as those of us who have patronized jay's store for years had to wait this long to get the issue that was virtually dedicated to him.

Jack,

I live in Alabama and am far from being a 'Yahoo'. I have owned my own software company for 17 years, and my wife holds a PhD in Soil Science.

I also host on my own server in house, the PMZZ magic builders web board. This is creation of Tabby Crabb (from Georgia and TN), Bob and Lucy Sanders (from Selma Alabama) and Michael Baker (from Birmingham). BTW, Lucy Sanders is an M.D., and I wouldn't call her a 'yahoo'.

For someone that made representation from a well respected magic shop, I don't understand why you would go to the level of disrepect to any magician or any part of this great country, just to make a point to Richard.

Best

This is not a change in policy: it is a return to our normal way of shipping to which there was supposed to be a one month exception, but due to a clerical error it did not get switched back.

Second class periodical mail, which is the way all magic magazines are shipped, takes weeks for the issues to spread out across the country.

Shipments of multiple issues to a dealer cannot be sent the same way--so they're sent by UPS. This means that the issues sent to dealers will arrive to the furthest point in the country between five and seven days from the day they're shipped.

Because the delivery of subscriber copies are unpredictable, and can take anywhere from one week to four weeks, subscribers get annoyed when they see the copies in shops before they receive their copy.

Shipping the dealer copies out a week later merely balances the delivery time. Subscribers are the lifeblood of Genii--if we had more subscribers we would be in better financial shape!

That's funny you should say that. Rick is actually thinking about buying a magic shop in Alabama, I hope I havent let the cat out of the bag. They are great people. Just the kind that the Marshalls would want to be running their shop, or working there as the case may be.

Tabby, it's ok. I'm looking at the books now and the shop seems in good shape. But yes, if I was 25 years younger, the opportunity at Magic, Inc would be a dream come true. Richard and I both agree on that.

And if I buy the shop, I don't have a problem getting Genii after the subscribers to sell my customer base. Subscribers have made an investment in the magazine and should get their return on their investment.

Richard, understand the issue with finances. Been there, done that. What a wild ride owning your own business is.

I'm glad to see you'll be carrying Genii in your shop if you do the shop. I don't think Genii gets enough exposure in the south and try to get magicians on the band wagon (as I'm sure you know). That would be a good location for PMZZ meetings too.

I know quite a few people who buy each issue of GENII from their favorite brick and mortar magic shop, not because they can't afford to subscribe (it costs them more to buy them individually), but because it is a way of supporting both GENII and the shop. Why should those GENII supporters be penalized by later delivery than the home subscribers?

Received my copy 6/22 in Ceres, Ca,

I do feel an inner twinge of something I can't identify when I see GENII at the magic shop before I get mine in the mail - It's not the end of the world. I generally get my other non-magic magazines delivered to my home a day or two before Borders or the newsstand gets theirs.

As an aside: Do "Yahoos" have shift keys on their keyboards?

Hatch, you are not paying attention to what I've written: I am not trying to get the copies to subscribers before the copies arrive at magic shops, I am attemping to get the copies to both magic shops AND subscribers closer to the same time.

No one is being penalized!

...dave egleston..yahoos do not have shift keys on their keyboards....they think keyboards are a board where they keep their keys to the truck.

even though i usually write in lower case i am not assuming your remark was referring to me...as it is an arthritic problem and not yahooism that makes it easier.

for additional questions about yahoos you should ask someone from alabama....except, of course, richard ruhl, who is the non-yahoo who lives there, for reasons of his own.

Actually, Mr. Townsend gave an out with his Swift analogy referring to "Yahoos"

As a fellow arthritis sufferer, use "Spell Check and Grammar Check" it saves a lot of key strokes.

..agreed..oh exalted one.....i've written when i got my genii...at magic inc, of course...and it was worth the wait.

guess i just got spoiled getting in on the 11th of the month for quite some time.

..is the fact that i still think magic shops should get them at the same time as subscribers..or no more than two days later on the topic?

When magazines (gulp) go on-line (gulp)as beautiful downloadable magazines (after everyone gets the hardware that can print everything in full-cover, bind it, and so on)...EVERYONE will THEN get their issues AT THE SAME TIME world-wide...and GENII will have 20,000 subscribers, plus a data-base and archive where EVERYTHING can be accessed that exists on a nominal pay-per-item basis...

(Hey, I can dream, can't I...)

However...

Being an old-schooler, I still love the "waiting," anticipating, the actual arrival of the envelope, the tearing away of the wrapping, the holding of the weighty magazine, smelling its mintiness, riffling its pages, and then slowly, slowly, lovingly gazing at the graphics and text...

Then it goes somewhere near to be dog-eared and then carefully put into a stack to be read again and again...

Onward...

I'm looking forward to the day when subscribers can get both the printed copy and have access to an online version (albeit private, password protected.)
