Storing Magic Periodicals
I have just bought complete files of The Chronicles, Epilogue and The Pallbearers Review periodicals. I am now faced with the challenge of storing them smartly on my bookcase with maybe a custom binder of some sorts. Here is the problem - I want something that looks good on the shelf rather than a cheap ring binder but i do not want to get them professionally bound as that could decrease the value.
Just thought i would pass it around Genii to hear your views as i am sure many of you have had the same quandary
Any ideas would be very much appreciated
Chris

Hahaha ... when I was a kid and finished collecting Pallbearers Review, I had them all comb bound.
For you I would suggest Century Boxes.

Check out what the Container Store has. It's what I use. They have everything from cheap cardboard to pricey wood:

Why would having them professionally bound decrease their value?

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
In terms of shelf solutions, I have seen these recommended (they also come in metal also and look like the ones in our library): http://www.shopbrodart.com/Library-Scho ... ton%2bfile
Whatever you do, I would respectfully suggest avoiding anything with cutouts on the sides of the containers. I used to use some from Staples that had these, which ended up tearing up the magazines on the ends of the stack when taking them in and out. Ugh.

Some collectors like the periodicals "as issued" so sometimes binding them together can cause them to be not as desirable.
This is not always the case but i like to edge on the side of caution.

Hi Erdnasephile,
I really appreciate your suggestions, i was going to put them in individual plastic sleeves and in a binder but your suggestions along with the others i have been given are the way to go!
Thank you!

It does depend because I have seen bound volumes of periodicals fetch a higher price at auctions than the loose issues.

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
USPS priority flat rate boxes can be reused and cut to work well as magazine boxes.
I use them to contain pamphlets and comb bound publications.

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
You really should use acid-free archival storage material. Free boxes from the post office are not acid free.
The magazines are often brittle from the acid content in the paper. Cardboard which also contains acid off-gasses and increases the deterioration of the paper in the magazines.
Century boxes are archival and acid free.

Personally, I prefer bound volumes, whether they be the originals or a reprint. For reasons I can't explain reading magazines in bound format is much more interesting than reading a sequence of loose issues.
Because of the eclectic nature of magazines, even specialised ones, there are so many tangents, opinions, and snippets, never mind the tricks, that stimulate the mind, engage the imagination, and often provide clues to things that have puzzled us for years.
So, Christopher, if you intend to sell your magazines at a later date and see them as an investment, keep them in the containers as recommended above. But if you want something you can cherish, enjoy and take pride in, then, I suggest professional binding. Find a retired bookbinder who won't be as expensive as a professional firm.
Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
Bound volumes are definitely my preference.
If I knew how, I would post a few pics of my professionally bound National Geographic magazines as an example. Two bound volumes each year. An expensive approach however they look great.
Always meant to get around to doing the same with Genii, might look into it in the new year.

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
Question: when bookbinders bind magazines, do they remove the staples out of the magazine then bind them? Or do they just chop off the spine of each magazine and glue (or sew) them in?
Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
The Nat Geo is perfect bound however the bookbinder does trim them and, for me, removes all full page ads before binding.
I appreciate that for, say, Genii one would probably want to keep the ads.

With my bound volumes of Abra and The Gen, the staples have been removed and the magazines stitched into place.

This is a prime example of bound volumes decreasing the price. I️ am a antique bookseller and I️ have often sold bound volumes of National Geographic magazines. Single issues in the original wraps with always command a much higher price than bound volumes.

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
All a matter of preference I suppose.
As I have (as near as dammit) a complete file of Nat Geos - I kid you not - I’d hate to think what condition they would be in now (or where they would be) if I hadn’t had them all bound.

Re: Storing Magic Periodicals
Since magic magazines have all become available in digital form, the value of full original files has plummeted like a stone.
You can not give away most old magic magazines, and full files are worth a fraction of what they used to be. Even those of us who, like me, have full files of many periodicals, will use the electronic versions to do research because of the enormous amount of time it saves.
