Hip Hip Replacement!

Postby Tom Frame » August 15th, 2017, 9:00 am

For the past three years, I’ve hobbled around with severe osteoarthritis of my right hip. Well, to purloin Popeye, I’ve had all I can stands, I can’t stands no more. Tomorrow morning, I’m having total hip replacement surgery. Oh joy!

And the worst part is that I had to quit smoking for the surgery! Aaaarg! I’m an unapologetic, angry, insufferable bitch!

Please send positive vibes to me and to my wonderful, possibly-soon-to-be-ex-wife Jan.

Good luck, mine is about 1.5 years old and you won't believe the difference. Years of skydiving and martial arts took a toll. No one damaged a hip from practicing card magic. Good thing you quit smoking, a lot of my after surgery therapy was walking.

Tom,
We met years ago at MAWNY. I am an Occupational therapist by trade. Just wanted to say that you best listen to your OT/PT well during your acute phase please. It will serve you well to your recovery. If you were my patient, you would have magic ,as well as, therapy as your magic....something I do on a daily basis. Get well and do what your therapy team tells you!!

Best,
Russ

Guys,

Thanks for your positive vibes. You made my morning. I'm off to the hospital with a spring in my limp.

Patient care of the highest caliber!

I was admitted to the hospital at 6:30 am. By 7:00 I was on a gurney, wearing a laughable gown, hideous socks and my hospital ID bracelet. I awaited my IV.

The nurse comes around at 7:30 and tells me that my scheduled operating suite will take a few more minutes to prepare.

At 8:30, the nurse and a bumbling administrator arrived. They said that there was no problem with the surgery suite. The problem was that my surgeon was not only not on site, but he was on an airplane and they didn't know when he might arrive. They regretted to inform me that my surgery had to be postponed. They said my surgeon would call me and inform me of the next available surgery time.

My surgeon called and said he wasn't on an airplane. He said that his flight had been delayed and that he informed the hospital at 2:00 am that he had to postpone because he couldn't ensure that he would arrive in time and be properly rested and prepared to operate. He instructed a nurse to call me at 5:00 and tell me that my surgery was postponed. Obviously, she never called. Zero communication among staff.

The surgery is now scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Clearly I am in need of many more positive vibes.

Only thing worse than surgery - having your operation cancelled!

Let's get that hip fixed tomorrow! Good luck!

It seems that US health care is just as disorganised as Canadian health care is supposed to be if not more so, despite all the misinformation that Americans get about how it all works up here. All I know is that the doctors in Toronto seem to be among the best in the world and they are never stuck in an aeroplane when they are supposed to be in the hospital.

Guys,

On the 17th, I got to the hospital at 6:00 am. They wheeled me into the surgical suite at 9:00am and discovered that they didn't have enough staff. They wheeled me out of the suite and parked me in a hallway. They found the needed staff and commenced surgery at about 9:45. It went very well, with little blood loss. After proving that I could pee and walk 50 feet with a walker, I was discharged at 6:45 pm. I was transported home by ambulance and strapped into a metal chair. One male and one tiny female paramedic carried me up the four flights of stairs to my treehouse apartment. Yes, we have no elevator.

I was essentially helpless for the first two days. My wife Jan is indeed a saint. I'm not worthy of her, but I'm damned thankful for her. I couldn't and wouldn't have had the surgery without her. She has provided me with excellent care and put up with my angry, demanding, intolerable, regressed behavior.

A nurse and a physical therapist visit me twice per week. I'm doing my exercises and progressing well. I've managed to avoid pneumonia, infection and dislocating my hip. The staples come out next week and then I can finally take a shower. Yay!

Thanks again for your supportive thoughts.
