John Moehring Has Died

Postby Michael Close » July 9th, 2017, 10:47 am

Gary Plants just posted on Facebook that John Moehring died around 2 a.m. this morning (July 9).

As a young man he was a sensational stage performer. He helped turn MAGIC magazine into the great magazine it was, and transformed M-U-M during the three years he was editor.

For the last ten years he had a tough road, with serious health challenges.

R.I.P., John. He will be missed.

Crushing news. John was one of my favorite people in magic.

There is a wonderful video tribute to John at the johnmoehring.com web site, from the Dallas Super Session honoring John in 2014.

Very sorry to hear this. I knew him first through his book, Texan Trixter, and later I met him in Las Vegas. One of those who contributed more to magic than he got from it.. R.I.P.

John was a great guy. I was very pleased to be able to feature him on the cover of Genii. Nice humble man and also a straight shooter. His piece on the farce Criss Angel perpetrated when he supposedly floated from the top of the Luxor hotel was fabulous--he described what the people who were there actually saw. That took balls.

The in-person version of that story was great, too. I will never forget it. John really knew how to tell a story.

Even discussing magic acts, shows, or ideas, I always found him diplomatic, fair, and unafraid to call a spade a spade. I really enjoyed every bit time I got to spend with him.

I got to visit with him last fall, and told him about a seance show I was working on with a friend here in DFW. He immediately made two suggestions, both of which killed in performance. A remarkable talent, with one of the keenest eyes for magic I have ever met. He will be missed.
